Chapter 4 - The Gavel's Wrath

Written in thick, black permanent marker on the inside hem of the shirt, faded by water but undeniably clear, were the words: Mom’s Magic Armor.

"She said the moon would keep me safe when I was scared," Nolan cried, wiping his cheeks with his sleeve. "I wrote that so I would never forget. My dad never gave me armor. He just left us behind."

The silence that followed was absolute, heavy, and profound. The air in the courtroom seemed to physically change.

Judge Harlan stared at the handwritten words on the inside of the shirt for a long, quiet moment. When he finally looked up, his eyes bypassed Carroway completely and locked onto Grant. The temperature in the room plummeted to absolute zero.

"Mr. Carroway," Judge Harlan said, his voice dropping into a register dripping with lethal, unbridled disgust. "You brought this child's clothing into my courtroom to demonstrate poverty and neglect. Instead, you have successfully demonstrated a level of maternal sacrifice, emotional stability, and devotion that your client's vast financial portfolio could never hope to purchase."

Grant opened his mouth, his face flushing a violent shade of red. "Your Honor, I—"

"You will not speak, Mr. Bellamy!" the judge roared, slamming his hand down on the bench. "You sat in this courtroom three months ago and swore under penalty of perjury that your business was failing. You claimed poverty to avoid paying child support. Yet, I am looking at a man wearing a fifteen-thousand-dollar Rolex and custom Italian shoes, while his son's mother scrubs floors at 3:00 a.m. to buy a twelve-dollar shirt!"

Carroway tried to intervene. "Your Honor, my client’s current assets are—"

"Your client's assets are about to be heavily scrutinized, counselor," Judge Harlan interrupted, grabbing his gavel. "I am denying the plaintiff's petition for primary custody in its entirety. Mrs. Bellamy is hereby awarded sole physical and legal custody of this child. Furthermore, I am ordering an immediate, full-scale forensic audit of Mr. Bellamy’s personal and corporate financial records."

Grant looked as though he had been physically struck. He sank back into his chair, the arrogant titan of industry completely decimated by an eight-year-old boy's permanent marker.

"If this audit discovers that you have been hiding assets to starve this mother into submission, Mr. Bellamy," the judge concluded, his eyes narrowing, "I will personally see to it that your wages are permanently garnished, your hidden accounts are seized, and you are brought up on charges of perjury. You will also be paying one hundred percent of Mrs. Bellamy's legal fees and back child support, effective immediately."

The gavel slammed down like a thunderclap. Carroway began furiously packing his briefcase, abandoning his humiliated client without a single word of comfort.
