Chapter 5 - Reaching the Stars

Six months later, the freezing trauma of that January morning felt like a distant, fading bad dream.
The court-ordered forensic audit had been a bloodbath. Investigators uncovered exactly what I had suspected for months: Grant had been intentionally hiding massive corporate bonuses in offshore accounts to avoid his financial obligations. The court seized the funds without mercy. With the massive influx of back pay and newly adjusted, strictly enforced child support, our lives transformed overnight.
I no longer had to leave my son in the middle of the night to clean commercial office buildings. I finally had the resources to enroll in the nursing program I had deferred for six years. We moved out of the cramped, drafty apartment and into a bright, beautiful two-bedroom flat with a small balcony overlooking the city skyline.
It was a warm, clear summer evening. I walked into Nolan’s new bedroom carrying a basket of clean laundry. He was standing on his small balcony, peering excitedly through the lens of the high-powered, professional-grade telescope we had bought together, mapping out the constellations just like he had always dreamed of doing.
"Mom! Look! You can see the craters on the moon tonight!" Nolan shouted, waving me over.

I smiled, setting the basket down and walking over to wrap my arms around his shoulders. He was growing so fast, his heart as big and bright as the stars he was studying.
I looked back into his bedroom. Hanging securely on the wall, mounted inside a beautiful glass shadow box, was the faded navy shirt. It was no longer worn to school, but it remained the most valuable thing we owned. It was a permanent, beautiful reminder that true wealth isn't measured by polished shoes or expensive watches, but by the unbreakable, magic armor of a mother's fierce and endless love.
