Chapter 14 - The Gala AmbushThree weeks later, the dust had settled. Victor was facing a massive federal inquiry, and Lily had vanished back into the obscurity from which she came.

But there was one final string to cut.

The annual Hollywood Producers Guild Gala was being held at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Gabriel’s production company had been nominated for several major awards following the massive success of The Blue Ridge House.

We flew to Los Angeles. Not to fight. But to celebrate.

I wore a sweeping, backless emerald gown. Gabriel wore a classic black tuxedo. We did not sneak through the back doors to avoid the press. We walked the red carpet, entirely unbothered by the flashing cameras and screaming reporters.

"Amelia! Amelia! Is it true you bankrupted Victor Vance to protect your ex-husband?" a reporter shouted, thrusting a microphone over the velvet rope.

I stopped. Gabriel paused beside me, his hand resting securely on the small of my back.

I looked directly into the camera lens.

"I do not protect ex-husbands," I said smoothly, my voice projecting a lethal, magnetic calm. "I protect my peace. And I highly recommend that anyone attempting to disrupt it checks their bank accounts first."

I offered a flawless smile, turned, and walked into the gala.

The ballroom was a sea of crystal chandeliers, A-list celebrities, and studio executives. We were seated at a prime table near the stage. The evening was a blur of speeches, champagne, and genuine laughter. Gabriel’s film swept its categories, validating everything we had built together.

But halfway through the evening, I felt a familiar, unsettling gaze from across the room.

I turned my head.

Sitting at a table near the back, looking older, exhausted, and entirely out of place, was Ethan.

He was not invited as a nominee. He had likely bought a table through a corporate sponsor. He was staring at me, a profound, devastating regret etched into every line of his face.

Gabriel noticed him. His posture instantly shifted, the protective instinct flaring.

"Do you want me to have security remove him?" Gabriel asked quietly, his eyes locked on Ethan.

"No," I said, placing my hand over Gabriel’s. "He has no power here."

When the gala transitioned into the after-party, Gabriel went to the bar to get us drinks. I stood near the massive glass doors overlooking the hotel's lush gardens.

"Amelia."

The voice was rough. Hesitant.

I turned slowly. Ethan stood five feet away. He wore a very expensive suit, but it hung on him differently now. The arrogant posture that used to consume every room he entered was gone. He looked like a man who had finally realized that he had burned down his own castle.

"Ethan," I said, my voice perfectly neutral.

"I saw the news," Ethan said, taking a step closer, though he kept a respectful distance. "About the stock liquidation. Julian told me what Victor tried to do. What Lily tried to do."

"It was a business decision," I replied coldly.

"You saved what was left of the company," Ethan swallowed hard, his eyes shining with unshed tears. "You didn't have to do that. After everything I did to you... you still protected my legacy."

I looked at the man I had loved for twelve years. The man who had promised me the world, only to lock me in a gilded cage.

"You misunderstand, Ethan," I said softly, stripping away the last illusion he held onto. "I didn't liquidate my shares to protect your legacy. I liquidated them to permanently sever myself from it. I didn't care if Cole International survived the crash or burned to the ground. I just wanted my name off the ledger."

Ethan flinched as if I had struck him. The realization hit him with physical force. He had spent his entire life believing that he was the center of my universe. He finally understood that he wasn't even in orbit anymore.

"I’m sorry," he whispered, a single tear slipping down his cheek. "I am so incredibly sorry, Amelia. For all of it."

"I know," I said. And I did. I believed his regret was genuine. But genuine regret does not repair shattered glass.

"Goodbye, Ethan," I said gently.

I didn't wait for him to respond. I turned my back and walked away.

Gabriel was waiting for me near the bar, holding two glasses of champagne. He looked at me, a silent question in his eyes.

May you like

"Are you okay?" Gabriel asked.

"I am perfect," I smiled, taking the glass from his hand. "Take me home."
