Chapter 23 - The Ambush at Canary WharfThere is a moment in every war when the tyrant realizes his crown is made of paper.

Sebastian’s fingers hovered over his keyboard. His lawyers were shouting frantically in the background, begging him not to sign the transfer documents, but Sebastian ignored them. He was a sociopath, but he was a pragmatic one. He knew that the wrath of sanctioned oligarchs was infinitely more dangerous than the loss of a small American town.
"You think you have won," Sebastian hissed, his eyes locked onto mine with pure, unadulterated hatred as he initiated the transfer protocol. "You think you can just waltz into my city, blackmail me, and fly back to your little farm?"
"It isn't blackmail, Sebastian. It is a hostile acquisition," I corrected him effortlessly.
The digital screens in the office flashed green. The municipal debt of Blue Ridge had been legally transferred to my foundation. The hospital, the schools, and the water supply were permanently, unconditionally safe.
"It's done," Sebastian spat, slamming his laptop shut. "Now, give me the master ledger and get out of my building before I have my security team throw you off the roof."
I looked at the flash drive on his desk. Then, I looked up at him, a slow, devastating smile spreading across my face.
"I have a confession, Sebastian," I said softly.
He frowned, a flicker of profound unease crossing his face. "What?"
"I told you I bypassed your firewall to access your master ledger," I explained, my voice echoing with lethal, matriarchal authority. "That was a lie. Your encryption is flawless. It would have taken my team six months to crack it."
Sebastian froze. The blood completely drained from his face. "Then... what is on that drive?"
"A recipe for peach pie," Gabriel spoke up, his voice a low, mocking rumble from behind me.
"You bluffed me," Sebastian whispered, stumbling backward, the reality of his monumental failure crushing the air out of his lungs. "You didn't have the ledger. You tricked me into surrendering the assets!"
"I didn't trick you. I played your ego," I said, stepping away from the desk. "You were so arrogant, so convinced of your own untouchable power, that the mere suggestion of exposure terrified you into submission. You handed me the keys to my town because you are a coward, Sebastian."
"Guards!" Sebastian screamed, completely unhinged. "Kill them! Don't let them leave this room!"
The heavy mahogany doors at the back of the office burst open.
But it wasn't Sebastian’s private security team that poured into the room.
It was a dozen heavily armed officers from the London Metropolitan Police, flanked by agents from the Financial Conduct Authority. They marched directly into the penthouse, weapons drawn, securing the perimeter in seconds.
Sebastian stared at them in absolute horror. "What is this?!"
"I didn't need your master ledger to destroy you, Sebastian," I said, turning to face him one last time. "When you executed the hostile takeover of the Blue Ridge municipal debt, you used funds that were flagged by the US Treasury Department. The moment you transferred those assets to my foundation, you officially engaged in an act of international money laundering on a federally monitored wire. I triggered the alarm the second you hit send."
The lead inspector marched up to the desk, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Sebastian Vance," the inspector boomed. "You are under arrest for international money laundering, extortion, and financial terrorism."
Sebastian fought wildly as the officers wrenched his arms behind his back. The polished, aristocratic billionaire was reduced to a pathetic, screaming criminal in a matter of seconds.
"You are a monster!" Sebastian shrieked as they dragged him past me. "You ruined my family!"
"No, Sebastian," I said softly, my voice devoid of any pity. "I just balanced the books."
I turned my back on him. Gabriel offered his arm, his eyes shining with an intense, protective adoration that took my breath away.

"Ready to go home, Mrs. Sterling?" Gabriel asked, a brilliant smile touching his lips.
"Take me to the mountains," I replied.
