Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

Friday morning arrived with a cold, biting Chicago wind. I dressed in a sharp, tailored crimson suit—the color of war. When Axton and I walked into the glass-walled boardroom of Sterling Enterprises, the entire executive board was already seated.
Axton looked incredibly smug. He carried a leather briefcase, setting it down on the massive mahogany table with a heavy, satisfying thud.
Mila was sitting in the corner of the room. She technically had no role in the company, but she had convinced my parents she wanted to "learn the family business." In reality, she was there to watch her lover steal my empire. She offered me a sweet, encouraging smile as I took my seat at the head of the table.
"Thank you all for being here," Axton announced, standing tall, projecting the aura of a confident CEO. "As you know, Callie and I want to ensure the Sterling Trust is managed with the utmost efficiency. To protect the company's assets, Callie has agreed to sign a consolidation directive, moving her controlling shares into a joint management holding."
He slid a thick stack of papers across the glass table toward me, placing a silver pen on top of it.
Mila watched with bated breath. Axton offered me an encouraging nod.
I picked up the silver pen. I looked at the documents, then up at Axton.
"Before I sign this, Axton," I said, my voice echoing loudly in the silent boardroom. "I just have one question about the joint holding company. Why is it registered in the Cayman Islands? And why is my sister listed as the primary secondary beneficiary?"
Axton’s confident smile instantly evaporated. The color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a ghost. "Callie... what are you talking about? You're misreading the legal jargon."
"Am I?" I asked, dropping the pen. I pressed a button on the remote control resting on the table.
The massive projector screen behind Axton flared to life. It didn't show the company's quarterly earnings. It showed a massive, high-definition screenshot of his text messages with Mila from our wedding night.
I hate watching her touch you. Make it fast, Ax. I’ll be wearing the red lingerie you like...
The boardroom erupted into chaos. My father shot up from his chair, his face turning purple with rage. "Axton! What the hell is this?!"
Mila leaped out of her chair, her face contorted in sheer panic. "Callie, it's fake! It's a deepfake! Someone hacked his phone!"
"The SEC doesn't deal in deepfakes, Mila," a deep voice boomed from the back of the room.
The heavy oak doors swung open, and Silas Vance walked in, flanked by two federal agents in sharp suits. Axton physically stumbled backward, hitting the edge of the conference table, his eyes wide with absolute terror as he recognized the man he had ruined three years ago.
"Silas," Axton choked out, his voice cracking.
"Hello, Axton," Silas said coldly, walking to the front of the room and dropping a massive binder of financial audits onto the table. "I told you I'd see you again. Axton Callaway, you are currently attempting to commit massive wire fraud and corporate embezzlement. The shell company you set up to drain the Sterling Trust has been seized by the federal government."
The federal agents stepped forward, pulling out handcuffs. "Axton Callaway, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering."
Axton panicked, looking desperately at me. "Callie, please! It was her idea! Mila manipulated me! She said you didn't care about the company!"
Mila let out a shriek of betrayal. "You lying bastard! You promised me we were going to Paris!"
"You're not going to Paris, Mila," I said, standing up from my chair, my voice ringing with absolute, icy authority. "You're going to be written out of the Sterling family will. Permanently. You smiled in my face while trying to destroy my life. Get out of my building."
As the agents hauled a sobbing, pathetic Axton out of the boardroom in handcuffs, and my father practically dragged a hysterical Mila out the side doors, a profound, heavy silence settled over the room. The board members stared at me in awe.

I turned to Silas, who was standing quietly by the window, watching me with a look of intense, unmistakable pride.
"Well," I said, letting out a breath I felt like I had been holding since my wedding night. "I believe the meeting is adjourned."
