Chapter 5 - A New Vow

One year later.

The Mediterranean sun was setting over the Amalfi Coast, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold, violet, and bruised peach. I stood on the sprawling terrace of our rented Italian villa, sipping a glass of crisp white wine, feeling the warm sea breeze tangle in my hair.

A lot can change in a year.

Axton had been sentenced to ten years in federal prison, his reputation entirely destroyed, his assets liquidated to pay back the people he had defrauded—including Silas’s brother, who had been fully exonerated. Mila, entirely cut off from the family wealth and disgraced in Chicago society, had moved to a small town in the Midwest, working a minimum-wage retail job and living in a reality she entirely deserved.

The Sterling Trust was safer than ever. Under my direct leadership as CEO, with Silas’s logistics firm operating as our primary partner, our stock had tripled. But the greatest victory of the past year hadn't been in the boardroom.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Silas pulled me flush against his broad chest, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to the curve of my neck.

"The caterers are ready for us," Silas murmured, his voice a low rumble that still sent a rush of heat straight to my core.

"Let them wait five more minutes," I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, perfectly safe, perfectly loved.

Our relationship had started in the fires of vengeance, a tactical alliance to destroy a mutual enemy. But in the quiet moments between the chaos—late-night strategy sessions over takeout, the way he would gently check on me when the betrayal felt too heavy, the profound respect he held for my mind and my strength—we had built something entirely real. Something unbreakable.

I turned around in his arms, looking up into those pale, striking eyes that had once warned me of danger, and had ultimately become my safest harbor.

Silas reached into the pocket of his linen suit jacket. He didn't drop to one knee. He simply looked at me, his soul completely bare, and pulled out a small velvet box. Inside rested a brilliant, flawless emerald-cut diamond.

"I don't have a corporate merger to block, Callie," Silas said softly, a tender, genuine smile touching his lips. "I don't need an ally. I don't need a partner in crime. I just need you. For the rest of my life. Will you marry me?"

Tears pricked my eyes, but this time, they were tears of absolute, overwhelming joy. I thought about the scared, heartbroken woman crying on the bathroom floor of the honeymoon suite, believing her life was over. She had no idea that her true life was just waiting for her to fight for it.

"Yes," I whispered, reaching up to cup his face. "Yes, Silas. Always."

As he slipped the ring onto my finger and pulled me into a kiss that tasted like the ocean and forever, I knew that the ghost of my past was finally dead. And my future was more beautiful than I ever could have planned.
