Chapter 1 - The Pulse of the Underworld

The rhythmic, rapid thwump-thwump-thwump of the fetal heartbeat echoing from the ultrasound machine was the only sound in the suffocating silence of the clinic room. It was a fast, determined sound, the undeniable proof of life that had been growing inside me for sixteen weeks. A life I had fiercely protected, a secret I had carried alone, until this exact, earth-shattering second. The air in the room had grown incredibly heavy, thick with a tension so absolute it felt as though the oxygen had been entirely siphoned away. The transition from the sterile, comforting environment of a routine medical check-up to the epicenter of Chicago’s criminal underworld was instantaneous, marked by the arrival of the towering man standing before me.

Dominic Russo did not command a room by speaking; he commanded it simply by existing within it. He stepped closer to the examination table, moving with the predatory, silent grace of a man accustomed to absolute authority. His dark, tailored suit seemed to absorb the harsh fluorescent light of the clinic. The two massive men in dark suits who had flanked him at the door remained perfectly still, their hands resting casually near the lapels of their jackets, their eyes scanning the hallway behind him. Dr. Miller, one of the most respected obstetricians in the state, was pressed flat against the counter, his face the color of wet ash, sweat beading on his forehead as he recognized the man who had just seized control of his clinic.

Dominic’s dark, piercing eyes never left mine. The terrifying calmness I remembered from the night of the gala was entirely gone, replaced by an intense, burning focus that made my skin flush. He closed the remaining distance between us. If a photograph could capture the sheer, overwhelming gravity of that moment—a scene permanently immortalized in the file 17_2.jpg—it would show the profound intimacy and danger colliding in a single frame. I sat on the edge of the examination table, wearing a flowing white off-the-shoulder dress that draped softly over the undeniable curve of my stomach, looking up at him. Dominic leaned in, completely invading my space, his commanding presence shielding me from the rest of the world. His face was inches from mine, his jaw set in rigid lines of realization, while his large, powerful hands moved instinctively, possessively, to cradle the heavy swell of my pregnant belly. In the background, framed by the doorway, stood the terrified Dr. Miller, alongside Derek and Britney, whose faces were frozen in masks of sheer, unadulterated shock.

"Is it mine?" Dominic whispered again, his voice a low, gravelly rasp that vibrated deep in my chest.

"Yes," I breathed, the word slipping past my lips before I could think to guard it. "It's yours."

Dominic closed his eyes for a fraction of a second. A muscle feathered in his jaw. When he opened his eyes again, the cold, calculating mafia boss was gone. In his place was a man who had just discovered the existence of an heir he never knew to hope for. His thumb stroked gently across the fabric of my dress, a touch so incredibly tender it stood in violent contrast to the bloodstained memory I had of him from the gala.

"What the hell is going on here?"

The loud, arrogant voice shattered the intimate silence. Derek pushed his way past the two men at the door, who immediately shifted, their hands moving seamlessly inside their jackets. Dominic didn't even turn his head. He simply raised one single finger, a silent command that stopped his bodyguards from drawing their weapons and dropping Derek where he stood.

Derek stood in the doorway, his designer polo shirt suddenly looking cheap and ridiculous in the presence of real, unyielding power. Britney was cowering behind him, her manicured hands clutching his arm, her eyes wide with a dawning terror as she slowly realized that the men in the hallway were not security guards.

"Chloe?" Derek demanded, trying to project the smug superiority he had wielded so effortlessly at the café an hour earlier. "What is this? Who is this guy? And what do you mean, yours? Are you pregnant? Is that why you've gotten so..." He trailed off, his eyes darting to Dominic's massive frame. "So fat?"

The temperature in the room plummeted to absolute zero.

Dominic slowly turned his head. He didn't let go of me. One hand remained firmly, protectively anchored to my waist, while the other rested against my stomach. He looked at Derek the way a lion looks at a dying insect. It wasn't anger. It was total, absolute annihilation.

"What did you just call her?" Dominic’s voice was barely a whisper, yet it carried perfectly across the room, laced with a lethal promise that made Dr. Miller whimper in the corner.

"I... I asked who you were," Derek stammered, his bravado instantly crumbling under the weight of Dominic's dead-eyed stare. He tried to puff out his chest, completely oblivious to the fact that he was standing inches away from the reaper. "I'm her ex-fiancé. And frankly, this is a private medical facility. You can't just barge in here."

"Her ex-fiancé," Dominic repeated softly, turning the words over in his mouth as if tasting poison. He looked down at me, his expression softening imperceptibly. "Is this the man you were running from the night of the gala, Chloe? The one who left you?"

"Yes," I answered, my voice steady, bolstered by the immovable wall of muscle and power standing between me and the man who had broken my heart. "We saw each other at a café earlier today. He came over to my table to tell me I had let myself go. He mocked my weight in front of a crowded room."

Dominic’s gaze shifted back to Derek. The shift in his aura was physical. The air hummed with violent intent.

"You mocked the mother of my child," Dominic stated, taking a single, slow step away from me, placing his body entirely between me and the door. "You looked at a woman carrying the bloodline of the Russo family, and you insulted her."

"The... the Russo family?" Derek choked out, the color finally, completely draining from his face. The name held a mythical, terrifying weight in Chicago. Everyone knew the Russos owned the ports, the politicians, and the streets. Derek’s eyes darted to the two massive men in the hallway, then back to Dominic, the reality of his situation crashing down upon him with the force of a falling building. "You're... you're Dominic Russo?"

"I am," Dominic said, stepping forward. Derek instinctively took a step back, but Dominic's guards moved, blocking the doorway, trapping him inside the room. Britney let out a small, terrified squeak and plastered herself against the wall.

"Mr. Russo, please," Derek begged, his voice cracking, raising his hands in a pathetic gesture of surrender. "I didn't know! I swear to God, I had no idea she was with you! I didn't know she was pregnant! It was just a joke, a stupid joke!"

"A joke," Dominic echoed, his face devoid of any human emotion. He reached out with terrifying speed, his large hand wrapping around Derek's throat, lifting the arrogant, smug man a full inch off the linoleum floor. Derek gasped, his hands clawing uselessly at Dominic's iron grip, his legs kicking in the air.

"Dominic," I said softly from the examination table.

He didn't drop Derek, but his eyes flicked to me.

"Not here," I whispered, glancing at the terrified Dr. Miller, who looked like he was about to have a heart attack. "Not in front of the baby."

Dominic held Derek suspended for three agonizing seconds before releasing his grip. Derek collapsed to the floor, coughing violently, gasping for air, crawling backward on his hands and knees until he hit the hallway wall.

"You are going to walk out of this clinic," Dominic said, looking down at the pathetic, wheezing man on the floor. "You are going to walk out, and you are going to wait for my men to contact you. If you attempt to flee this city, if you attempt to board a plane, a train, or get into a car, I will have you buried beneath the foundation of the new skyline. Do you understand me?"

Derek could only nod frantically, tears streaming down his face, his throat too bruised to speak. He scrambled to his feet, grabbing a hysterical Britney by the arm, and practically sprinted down the hallway, fleeing the absolute ruin that had just descended upon his life.

Dominic watched them disappear, his face an unreadable mask. Then, he turned back to me. The violence melted away instantly. He reached out, offering me his hand.

"Four months, Chloe," he said, his voice thick with a mixture of awe and gentle reprimand. "You let me tear this entire city apart looking for you for four months, while you were carrying my child."

I placed my hand in his. His grip was warm, solid, and impossibly safe. "I didn't think you would want to be found."

May you like

"I am never letting you out of my sight again," Dominic promised, helping me down from the table. He turned to Dr. Miller, who flinched. "Clear her schedule. Transfer all of her medical records to my private estate. From this moment on, you work exclusively for me."

As Dominic wrapped his heavy wool coat over my shoulders to protect me from the cold, leading me out of the clinic surrounded by an army of men, I realized one absolute truth. The quiet, lonely life I had known was over. I had just walked into the dark, and the king of the shadows was holding my hand.
