Chapter 3 - Shadows and Silk

The next seventy-two hours inside Dominic Russo’s estate were a surreal blend of absolute luxury and terrifying realization. I had traded a modest, lonely apartment for a sprawling fortress where my every need was anticipated before I even voiced it. A private chef prepared nutrient-dense, perfectly balanced meals tailored to Dr. Miller's exact prenatal specifications. A team of silent, efficient staff ensured my clothes were pressed, the massive fireplaces were always lit, and the security perimeter remained impenetrable.
But the most profound change was Dominic himself.
The man the city feared, the ruthless boss who allegedly ordered executions over cold coffee, was entirely different behind closed doors. When he returned from his study late at night, smelling of expensive scotch and cigar smoke, the dangerous aura melted away the moment he saw me. He would strip off his suit jacket, loosen his tie, and slide into the massive bed beside me, immediately pulling me into his chest. He would spend hours simply resting his large, calloused hand against the swell of my stomach, waiting patiently for the faint, delicate flutters of the baby moving beneath my skin.
"There," he whispered one evening, his eyes widening slightly as a tiny kick met the palm of his hand. His breath caught in his throat. It was the first time he had felt it. The most dangerous man in Chicago looked down at my stomach with an expression of profound, naked wonder. "He's strong."
"She," I corrected softly, running my fingers through his thick, dark hair. "I have a feeling it's a girl."
Dominic smiled, a rare, breathtaking expression that transformed his harsh features. "A girl. A daughter. I'll have to buy the rest of the city just to build walls high enough to keep the world away from her."
While I was bathed in the warm, protective glow of his obsession, a very different kind of attention was being focused on the man who had abandoned me.
On Tuesday morning, Derek arrived at the downtown logistics firm where he had worked as a mid-level manager for five years. He swiped his keycard at the glass turnstile in the lobby.
It flashed red. Access Denied.
Annoyed, Derek approached the security desk. Before he could speak, the head of building security—a man who usually greeted him with a smile—handed him a cardboard box containing the contents of his desk.
"You're done, Derek," the guard said coldly. "HR sent an email at 6:00 AM. Your employment has been terminated, effective immediately, pending a criminal investigation into corporate embezzlement."
Derek blanched. "Embezzlement? That's insane! I haven't stolen a dime!"
"Tell it to the auditors," the guard replied, stepping forward and physically forcing Derek out of the revolving doors onto the rainy Chicago pavement.
Panicking, Derek pulled out his phone to call his boss. The call went straight to voicemail. He tried to call his lawyer, but when he attempted to pay the retainer fee online, his screen flashed a terrifying error message.
Account Frozen. Please Contact Your Financial Institution.
Standing in the freezing rain, holding a cardboard box, Derek hailed a cab and rushed to his bank. He sat in a cubicle across from a nervous-looking branch manager, demanding to know why his funds were inaccessible.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Vance," the manager stammered, avoiding Derek's eyes. "But we received a federal hold order on all your accounts this morning. Furthermore, your mortgage provider has flagged your recent payments as fraudulent, and foreclosure proceedings have been expedited. You have forty-eight hours to vacate your condominium."
"Forty-eight hours?!" Derek screamed, slamming his hands on the desk. "This is a mistake! Someone is doing this to me!"
It wasn't a mistake. It was a masterpiece.
Dominic’s men hadn't just fired Derek; they had planted a perfectly constructed, undeniable digital paper trail proving Derek had been siphoning money from his company for years. They had routed the fake funds through offshore accounts that triggered federal money laundering alarms, instantly freezing every asset Derek possessed.
Desperate, broken, and terrified, Derek ran back to his condo to find Britney packing her designer bags.
"Britney, baby, what are you doing?" Derek pleaded, dropping his wet cardboard box on the floor. "I need you right now. There's been a massive mistake at the bank, but I'm going to fix it."
Britney zipped up her Louis Vuitton duffel bag, refusing to look at him. "My credit card was declined at the salon, Derek. And then I got a phone call."
Derek froze. "A phone call? From who?"
Britney finally looked at him, her eyes wide with the same terror she had felt in the clinic. "From a man with a very deep voice. He told me that if I was still in this apartment in ten minutes, I would be considered an accessory to your embezzlement charges. He said the Russo family doesn't like collateral damage, but they don't lose sleep over it, either."
She walked past him, pulling her suitcase toward the door. "You insulted Dominic Russo's pregnant girlfriend, Derek. You're a dead man walking. And I am not going down with you."
The door slammed shut, leaving Derek standing alone in a rapidly darkening apartment that he no longer owned, with no money, no job, and a target on his back placed by a man who owned the very shadows of the city.
Back at the estate, I was sitting on the terrace, wrapped in a thick cashmere blanket, drinking decaf tea and watching the waves roll across the lake. Dominic stepped out through the French doors, looking immaculate in a tailored dark suit, holding a sleek black tablet. He sat in the chair beside me, leaning over to press a kiss to my temple.
"How are you feeling?" he asked quietly.
"Peaceful," I admitted, surprised by how true it was. "What's on the tablet?"
Dominic set the tablet on the table between us. The screen displayed a series of reports, financial documents, and a live security feed of Derek sitting on the floor of his empty apartment, crying into his hands.
"I told you there was a tax for disrespect," Dominic said smoothly, his eyes devoid of any pity as he watched Derek break. "He has no job. He has no money. His fiancée left him. He will be evicted tomorrow morning. By the end of the week, the embezzlement charges will hit the prosecutor's desk, and he will face ten to fifteen years in a maximum-security penitentiary."
I stared at the screen, the magnitude of Dominic's power finally settling into my bones. He hadn't raised a hand. He hadn't fired a single bullet. He had simply rewritten the reality of Derek's life until it collapsed entirely.

"Is this what happens when someone crosses you?" I asked, looking away from the screen and up into Dominic's dark eyes.
"This is what happens when someone insults the mother of my child," Dominic corrected gently, reaching over to wipe a stray drop of tea from my lower lip with his thumb. "For you, Chloe, I wouldn't just ruin a man. I would burn the entire world to ashes and build you a throne upon the ruins. Get dressed in something beautiful tonight. We have a dinner to attend."
