Chapter 1 - The Langley Intervention

The phone rang twice before Edward Langley answered.

I didn't have to explain who I was.

He remembered my voice immediately.

I told him about the insurance denial, my voice shaking despite my best efforts to hide it.

Edward didn't offer empty sympathy.

He offered action.

"Give me ten minutes," he said, and hung up.

Exactly twelve minutes later, my phone rang again.

It was the chief administrator of Columbia Presbyterian Hospital.

Not only was my specialist monitoring approved, but I had been moved to the VIP maternity ward, fully paid for by an anonymous donor.

I called Edward back to thank him.

"You don't owe me a thank you, Lily," he said quietly. "But you do owe me a meeting."

The next afternoon, a black car picked me up from my tiny apartment in Queens.

It didn't take me to a hospital.

It took me to the top floor of Langley Holdings.

Edward sat behind a massive mahogany desk, looking at a printed copy of my fragmented resume.

"Cole Mercer is a charismatic speaker," Edward said, leaning back in his chair. "But he hasn't had an original idea in five years."

He looked directly into my eyes.

"Who really wrote his investor pitches, Lily?"

I looked at the billionaire who had saved my unborn children.

"I did," I said.

Edward smiled for the first time since I met him.

"I thought so. His new campaigns are an absolute disaster."

He slid a contract across the desk.

"I need a Head of Global Strategy, Lily. And you need a war chest."
