Chapter 1 - The Red Carpet Resurrection

The rhythmic drumming of the rain against the tinted windows of the Maybach felt like a ticking clock, counting down the seconds until my entire life was thrust back into the unforgiving spotlight. For years, I had conditioned myself to shrink, to apologize for the space I occupied, and to carry the heavy, suffocating burden of my ex-husband’s public narrative. Julian Duval had crafted a masterpiece of a lie, painting me as the tragically defective wife whose inability to carry a child had driven a wedge into our perfect marriage. I watched the glowing screen of the iPad resting on my lap, replaying the clip of Julian on the red carpet just minutes ago. He stood there, practically glowing under the flashbulbs, his arm wrapped tightly around Dalia Fontaine, a twenty-six-year-old beauty queen who wore her youth like a weapon. When a reporter had dared to ask if I might attend the Allesian Hearts Gala, Julian had chuckled—a soft, condescending sound that used to make my blood run cold. “I doubt she’ll show her face,” he had said, his voice dripping with faux sympathy. He believed I was still the shattered woman he had left weeping on the floor of our empty nursery, too ashamed of my three miscarriages and our highly publicized divorce to ever step into his world again.
What Julian did not know, what he could not possibly have anticipated in his wildest, most arrogant dreams, was that I was less than two blocks away, riding in the back of a luxury sedan headed straight for his coronation.
I locked the iPad screen and let out a long, trembling breath. My hand instinctively dropped to rest over the undeniable, swelling curve of my five-month pregnancy beneath the heavy black velvet of my custom-tailored gown. The fabric was soft, wrapping around me like armor, a stark contrast to the fragile, invisible woman I used to be. Beside me, radiating a quiet, unshakeable power, sat Gabriel Lancaster. Gabriel was not a man who demanded the spotlight, though he owned most of it; he was a self-made billionaire investor I had met during my desperate escape to London. While I was piecing my shattered career back together, working late nights in strategy consulting, Gabriel had seen my brilliance, not my brokenness. He didn't look at me with pity. He didn't treat my trauma as a burden. He treated me like an equal.
Gabriel reached across the plush leather seat and gently placed his large, warm hand over mine. He didn't offer empty platitudes. He didn't tell me to be strong, to ignore Julian, or to push through the anxiety that was currently making my heart hammer wildly against my ribs. He simply looked into my eyes, his own gaze steady and deeply grounding, and said, “We can tell the driver to turn around right now, Khloe. We can go have dinner in Mayfair and let them play their little games. The choice is entirely yours.”
I looked at him, feeling a sudden, overwhelming surge of clarity. For years, newspapers had reduced me to a footnote in Julian’s success story. They wrote endless, speculative articles about my “fertility struggles” while conveniently ignoring the fact that I was the one who had stayed up until 3:00 AM drafting the business proposals that launched Duval Enterprises. They never knew about the silent tears I cried in hospital rooms while Julian was out at “networking dinners” that inevitably ended in hotel rooms. I was tired of disappearing. I was tired of letting Julian write the ending to my story.
“No,” I said, my voice steadying, finding a strength I hadn't felt in years. “I’m tired of hiding. Then we go in.”
Gabriel smiled, a slow, fiercely protective smile that made the remaining anxiety in my chest evaporate. “Then we go in,” he agreed.
The Maybach glided to a smooth halt at the edge of the red carpet. The chaotic roar of the paparazzi, the shouting reporters, and the blinding explosion of flashbulbs hit me like a physical wave even before the door opened. Gabriel’s security detail stepped out first, creating a seamless barrier, and then Gabriel himself emerged. The moment the press recognized the elusive, notoriously private London billionaire, the shouting doubled in volume. “Mr. Lancaster! Gabriel! Over here!”
Gabriel ignored them. He buttoned his bespoke tuxedo jacket, turned around, and extended his hand back into the car. I took a deep breath, placed my hand in his, and stepped out into the freezing New York night.
The noise didn't just change; it completely fractured. A stunned, breathless silence rippled through the front row of photographers as they recognized the woman Julian had just smugly predicted would never dare show her face. I stood tall, the black velvet gown cascading around me, my hair swept into a sleek, elegant style that exposed the sharp line of my jaw and the multi-million dollar diamond drop earrings Gabriel had gifted me.
And then, a seasoned photographer in the second row lowered his camera, his eyes going wide as they dropped to my midsection. The black velvet hugged the unmistakable, beautiful mound of my pregnant belly.
Pandemonium erupted.
“Khloe! Khloe, over here!” the reporters began screaming, pushing against the velvet ropes. “Are you pregnant? How far along are you?” The questions came like rapid gunfire. “Is Julian aware?” “Khloe, are you and Gabriel together?” And then, the loudest shout of all pierced the chaos: “Gabriel, is the baby yours?!”

Every single instinct I had developed over seven years of emotional abuse during my marriage to Julian screamed at me to duck my head, to cover my stomach with my clutch, to shield Julian from whatever scandal or embarrassment my mere existence might cause him. My body was practically hardwired to make myself small so Julian could appear large.
But as Gabriel’s hand slid from my palm to rest firmly and proudly on the small of my back, guiding me forward, I realized I didn't owe Julian Duval my silence anymore. I owed him absolutely nothing. I straightened my shoulders, lifted my chin, and rested my own hand proudly on my baby bump. I didn't answer the screaming reporters, but the serene, unbreakable smile on my face gave them every headline they could ever want. With Gabriel walking in perfect step beside me, I walked down the red carpet, leaving the ghosts of my past drowning in the flashbulbs behind me.
