Chapter 4 - The Truth Unveiled

As the applause died down and the multi-course dinner service began, the atmosphere in the ballroom shifted from polite formality to electric, frantic gossip. The servers glided between the tables pouring vintage champagne, but nobody was paying attention to the food. Every whispered conversation, every covert glance, was directed at our table. I could feel the weight of their stares, but instead of making me shrink, it fueled a newfound, radiant confidence within me. I ate my dinner, laughed at Gabriel’s dry, witty jokes, and let the elite of New York see exactly how thoroughly I had survived my own destruction.

Halfway through the main course, Gabriel leaned over, his hand resting warmly on my thigh beneath the tablecloth. “I have to step out to take a scheduled call with the London office regarding the Tokyo acquisition. Will you be alright here for five minutes?”

“I’ll be perfectly fine,” I assured him, offering a genuine smile. “I think I’m going to stretch my legs and visit the powder room anyway.”

Gabriel kissed my cheek and slipped out the side doors of the ballroom, flanked by his discreet security detail. I placed my napkin on the table and made my way toward the grand marble hallway that housed the restrooms.

The corridor was blessedly quiet, a stark contrast to the buzzing hive of the main ballroom. I took a deep breath, resting my hands on my pregnant belly, feeling a strong, reassuring kick from the little life growing inside me. A tear of pure joy pricked my eyes. After so much loss, after so much agony and grief, I was finally going to be a mother.

“You did this on purpose.”

The voice was harsh, bitter, and laced with venom. I turned around to find Julian stepping out from the shadows of a marble pillar. He had followed me. Without his entourage of sycophants and without Dalia by his side, he looked remarkably small. The expensive tuxedo couldn't hide the desperate, cornered panic radiating from him.

“Did what on purpose, Julian?” I asked, my voice calm, refusing to let him see even a fraction of the fear he used to inspire in me.

“This!” he hissed, gesturing wildly toward the ballroom doors. “Parading in here pregnant with a billionaire! Showing off! You humiliated me in front of the board of directors! You humiliated Dalia! You orchestrated this entire benefactor stunt just to spite me, didn't you?”

I let out a soft, dry laugh, shaking my head in disbelief. “You really haven't changed at all, have you? The entire universe still revolves around Julian Duval. Everything I do must be a calculated reaction to your existence.”

“Don't play innocent with me, Khloe!” Julian snarled, taking a threatening step forward. “You trapped him, didn't you? You couldn't give me a child for seven years, and suddenly you move to London and manage to get knocked up by one of the richest men in Europe? How much fertility treatment did his money buy you? Did you fake the miscarriages just to get out of our marriage?”

The sheer, breathtaking cruelty of his words hit me like a physical blow, but instead of making me crumble, it ignited a raging inferno of absolute clarity. The man standing before me was not a tragedy I had failed to fix; he was a monster I had finally escaped.

“I didn't need fertility treatments, Julian,” I said, my voice dropping to a deadly, icy whisper that stopped him in his tracks. “My doctors in London ran a full panel. There was never anything wrong with me. The stress of managing your fragile ego, the sleepless nights fixing your disastrous corporate blunders, the constant emotional abuse—my body was in a state of perpetual trauma. The moment I left you, the moment I excised your toxic presence from my life, my body healed. You didn't just break my heart, Julian. You poisoned my environment.”

Julian’s face flushed a violent, angry red. “You’re delusional! I built you! You were nothing before you married me, and you’re nothing now without Lancaster’s money backing you!”

“You built me?” I took a step toward him, closing the distance, towering over him with a newfound, terrifying authority. “Let’s talk about who built who, Julian. Let’s talk about the algorithms I coded at 2:00 AM while you were out at clubs. Let’s talk about the Q3 expansion strategy that saved Duval Enterprises from bankruptcy three years ago—the strategy I wrote, which you presented to the board as your own. You didn't build me. You cannibalized me. You are a parasite wearing a custom suit.”

Julian opened his mouth to shout, but I wasn't finished. I was finally delivering the eulogy to our marriage that he desperately needed to hear.

“And since we’re talking about business,” I continued, a cold smile touching my lips. “You should probably check your emails. Gabriel didn't just fund this gala. For the last six months, his holding company has been aggressively buying up the mezzanine debt of Duval Enterprises. The loans you defaulted on last quarter? Gabriel owns them. You came here tonight to network, Julian. But by Monday morning, you won't even have a company left to run.”

Julian staggered backward, hitting the marble wall. The blood completely drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse. His mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. The illusion of his power, his wealth, and his grand narrative had just been violently shattered, leaving him with absolutely nothing but the crushing weight of his own hubris.

I turned away from him, my hand resting protectively over my stomach, and walked back toward the ballroom, leaving the ghost of my past suffocating in the hallway.
