Chapter 2 - The Monday Morning Bloodbath

By 9:00 AM on Monday, my phone had logged forty-seven missed calls from my father, twenty-two from my mother, and fourteen text messages from Adrian begging for a "rational conversation." I ignored all of them. Instead, I sat behind the massive mahogany desk in my corner office at Sterling Crest Capital, sipping a black espresso and watching the financial dominoes fall.
Marcus Bell walked in, handing me a thick leather binder. "It’s done, Elena," he said, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips. "The freeze is absolute. Harrington Construction’s payroll accounts bounced at 8:00 AM. Their suppliers have been notified that our guarantee is null and void. The bank has already initiated foreclosure protocols on their heavy machinery."
"And Sienna?" I asked, flipping open the binder to review the numbers.
"Her business accounts are locked. Without our credit backing, her landlord demanded the next six months of rent upfront for her studio space. She couldn't pay. They are locking the doors as we speak."
I nodded, feeling a profound, icy calm. For years, I had carried the exhausting weight of being the family savior. The anxiety of keeping their secrets, managing their failures, and shielding them from the consequences of their own incompetence had aged me. But today, the burden was gone.
At exactly 11:30 AM, security called up from the lobby. "Ms. Harrington, your father and your husband are downstairs. They are demanding to see you. Your father is... quite loud."
"Send them up," I said, leaning back in my leather chair. "But have two guards escort them. If they raise their voices, remove them."
Ten minutes later, the elevator doors opened. My father stormed in, but his momentum died the moment he saw the scale of my operation. He looked at the panoramic views of the city, the sleek glass walls, and the dozens of analysts working at their terminals. For the first time in his life, he realized he was entirely out of his depth.
Adrian looked physically ill. The arrogant man who had proudly held my sister's hand on Saturday night was completely gone. He stared at me behind the desk as if looking at a stranger.
"Elena," my father began, forcing a tone of paternal authority that immediately cracked. "This has gone far enough. You've made your point. You are angry, and you have every right to be. But you are destroying my life's work over a domestic dispute!"
"A domestic dispute?" I repeated, raising an eyebrow. "You knew they were sleeping together, Dad. Don't insult my intelligence."
My father swallowed hard. "Sienna is fragile! She’s sensitive! She fell in love, Elena, she couldn't help it! We didn't want to break your heart, so we were waiting for the right time to tell you. But you can't punish the whole family for this!"
"I am not punishing you," I said, folding my hands on the desk. "I am simply no longer subsidizing your failures. Sterling Crest is a business, and Harrington Construction is a toxic asset. I am cutting my losses."
Adrian stepped forward, placing his hands flat on my desk. "Elena, please. I didn't know. I swear to God I didn't know you were the money behind everything. If you pull this funding, I'll go bankrupt too. Sienna and I... we can't afford the lifestyle—"
"You should have thought about the lifestyle before you slept with my sister in our marital bed," I cut him off, my voice sharp as a razor. "My attorneys have already filed the divorce papers. Since you insisted on a prenup when we got married because you were making more money than me at the time, you have zero claim to Sterling Crest. You get exactly what you brought into this marriage: nothing."
"You vindictive bitch," my father snarled, taking a threatening step forward.

Immediately, the two security guards stepped in, grabbing his arms. I didn't even flinch.
"Escort them out," I ordered, picking up my pen. "And if they ever set foot in this building again, have them arrested for trespassing."
