Chapter 4 - The Final Settlement

The divorce proceedings were the final nail in Adrian’s coffin. He had hired a sleazy, aggressive lawyer who promised him that he could pierce the corporate veil of Sterling Crest Capital and claim half of my net worth. But they had severely underestimated me.
We sat in the cold, sterile mediation room: me, my elite team of corporate attorneys, Adrian, and his discount lawyer. Adrian looked exhausted. He had lost weight, his suit was wrinkled, and the arrogant spark in his eyes was entirely extinguished.
His lawyer cleared his throat. "My client is entitled to fifty percent of all marital assets, including the valuation of Sterling Crest Capital, as it was built during the duration of the marriage."
My lead attorney, a ruthless woman named Sarah, slid a thick file across the table. "Actually, counselor, Sterling Crest was incorporated in Delaware three years before the marriage. It is structured as an irrevocable trust, of which my client is the sole beneficiary, entirely protected by the ironclad prenuptial agreement your client insisted upon signing."
Adrian’s lawyer blanched, frantically flipping through the documents.
"Furthermore," Sarah continued, her voice dripping with predatory satisfaction, "we have compiled a forensic accounting of your client's spending over the last twelve months of the marriage. He used joint marital funds to purchase jewelry, hotel rooms, and luxury gifts for his mistress, Sienna Harrington. Under state law, this constitutes dissipation of marital assets."
I looked directly at Adrian, who was staring at the table, refusing to meet my eyes.
"We are not giving you a dime, Adrian," I said, my voice steady and absolute. "In fact, according to the accounting, you owe me eighty-five thousand dollars in misappropriated funds. But I'll make you a deal."
Adrian finally looked up, a glimmer of pathetic hope in his eyes.
"Sign the absolute waiver to any and all claims today," I offered, sliding the final divorce decree toward him. "Walk away with the clothes on your back and the debt you’ve accumulated, and I won't sue you for the money you stole to fund your affair. You get to walk away free. Broke, but free."
His lawyer leaned in, whispering frantically in his ear. Adrian closed his eyes, a single tear escaping and tracking down his cheek. He realized he was beaten. He had traded a woman who built empires for a woman who could only destroy them, and it had cost him everything.

With a shaking hand, Adrian picked up the pen and signed the papers.
As I walked out of the mediation center, breathing in the crisp autumn air, I felt a physical weight lift off my shoulders. The parasites had been surgically removed. I was finally, truly free.
