Chapter 1 - The Emergency Room

Sofía could not remember getting out of the house.
Later, she would remember fragments.
The cold tile beneath her palm.
The sound of Carmen saying she was “being dramatic.”
Iván standing near the SUV, still holding her keys.
And Andrés.
Her husband.
Frozen in the doorway while his father’s violence changed everything.
But in the moment, all Sofía knew was pain.
A deep, terrifying pain low in her stomach.
She tried to stand, but her knees gave out.
“Stop pretending,” Carmen muttered. “Ramiro barely touched you.”
Then Sofía looked down.
Her face went white.
There was blood on her dress.
The room changed.
Not their expressions.
Not immediately.
Carmen still looked irritated.
Ramiro looked angry, as though Sofía had caused trouble by getting hurt.
But Andrés finally moved.
“Sofía?”
His voice shook.
She looked at him through tears.
“I’m pregnant.”
The words silenced everyone.
Andrés stared at her.
“What?”
“I found out two days ago,” she whispered. “I was going to tell you tonight.”
Her hand pressed against her stomach.
“But I think something is wrong.”
For the first time, panic entered Andrés’s face.
He rushed toward her.
But Sofía recoiled.
“Don’t touch me.”
His face broke.
“Sofía, please.”
“You stood there.”
“I didn’t know—”
“You stood there,” she repeated.
The neighbors heard the shouting and called an ambulance before Andrés’s family could decide how to handle the situation privately.
At the emergency room, Sofía lay beneath bright lights while nurses moved quickly around her.
A doctor asked questions.
Had she fallen?
Had someone hit her?
Had she been injured at home?
Sofía stared at the ceiling.
For years, she had protected Andrés from difficult truths.
She defended him when his family insulted her.
She told herself he was quiet because he hated conflict.
She called his silence gentleness.
But silence in the face of cruelty was not gentleness.
It was permission.
“Yes,” Sofía said at last.
Her voice trembled.
“My father-in-law kicked me.”
The doctor paused.
Then nodded to a nurse.
“We need to contact the police.”
Andrés appeared in the doorway minutes later.
“I’m her husband,” he said urgently. “I need to see her.”
Sofía turned her head away.
“No,” she said.
The doctor looked at him.
“Sir, you need to wait outside.”
Andrés’s face crumpled.
“Sofía, I’m sorry.”
May you like
She closed her eyes.
But his apology could not reach the place where her hope had been.
