Chapter 3 - The SUV Keys and the Security Camera

The police returned to Ramiro and Carmen’s house that night.
They found the family waiting in the living room.
Carmen had changed clothes.
Ramiro had poured himself a drink.
Iván sat on the sofa, pretending to scroll through his phone.
Andrés stood near the front window, staring at the street.
Officer Herrera entered with two additional officers.
“We need to collect evidence related to an assault reported at this address,” she said.
Ramiro stood.
“This is a family disagreement.”
“No,” Officer Herrera replied. “It is an allegation of assault causing injury.”
Carmen folded her arms.
“That girl is unstable. She became hysterical over a car.”
Officer Herrera looked toward the driveway.
“Whose white Toyota SUV is parked outside?”
Iván’s face changed.
“It’s Sofía’s,” Andrés said quietly.
“Who had the keys?”
No one answered.
Officer Herrera looked at Iván.
“Sir?”
“I was just borrowing it.”
“Did Mrs. Morales give you permission?”
Iván swallowed.
“No.”
The officer nodded.
“Where are the keys now?”
Andrés slowly reached into his pocket.
He placed them on the coffee table.
Officer Herrera stared at him.
“You had them while your wife was transported to the hospital?”
Andrés looked down.
“I did not know what to do.”
The officer’s voice hardened.
“You could have returned her property.”
But the most damaging evidence came from a neighbor across the street.
She had a security camera facing the road.
It recorded part of the front yard and the open living-room window.
The footage did not show every detail inside.
But it captured Sofía trying to leave.
It recorded Carmen blocking the door.
It caught Sofía shouting, “Let me go!”
Then came the sound of glass breaking.
A heavy impact.
And Andrés’s voice.
“Dad, stop!”
The recording also captured Carmen’s response.
“She deserves to learn.”
Officer Herrera played it once.
No one spoke.
Then the officer looked at Ramiro.
“You need to come with us.”
Ramiro laughed bitterly.
“For what? A woman who fell into a table?”
“For assault,” the officer said. “And for attempting to intimidate the victim after the incident.”
Carmen stepped forward.
“You cannot arrest my husband.”
Officer Herrera met her eyes.
“I can, and I am.”
As officers led Ramiro toward the door, he turned to Andrés.
“Say something.”
Andrés did not move.

For once, his silence did not protect his father.
It exposed him.
