Chapter 14

The grand ballroom of the Pierre Hotel was a masterpiece of gilded opulence, packed to the brim with the world's most powerful tech magnates, venture capitalists, and a swarm of hungry international press. The atmosphere was electric, buzzing with the scandalous rumors of EcoCore’s imminent collapse.
David and I did not sneak through the service elevators. We walked straight through the main mahogany doors, an imposing, impenetrable fortress of absolute power. The room fell dead silent as we entered. Whispers rippled through the elite crowd like a physical wave, the billionaires physically parting to give us a wide berth, looking at us as if we were already ghosts.
At exactly 9:00 PM, Julian Vance strode onto the main stage. He was a striking, arrogant man in his early forties, exuding an aura of untouchable Silicon Valley privilege. Marcus stood proudly at the edge of the stage, sipping champagne, already wearing the smug expression of a man who believed he had won the throne.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Julian’s voice boomed over the speakers, dripping with false sympathy and triumphant malice. "Tonight was supposed to be a celebration of innovation. Instead, it is a sobering reminder of the dangers of unchecked corporate greed. The revelations regarding EcoCore’s massive, systemic fraud are a tragedy for the green-energy sector. But rest assured, Apex Global is prepared to step in, acquire the distressed assets, and restore integrity to the market."
He paused, soaking in the flashing cameras of the press, ready to deliver the final blow.
I stood in the center of the room, my hand resting lightly on David’s arm, and gave a subtle, sharp nod to my security team in the production booth above.
The massive digital screens flanking the stage—screens that had been displaying the Apex Global logo—violently glitched. They didn't show Julian's polished corporate presentation. They illuminated with undeniable, damning evidence of international corporate cyber-terrorism.
It was a digital masterpiece of public execution. The colossal screens displayed the raw, undeniable video footage of Marcus stealing the file from David’s office. Beside it, the screens scrolled through the encrypted text messages between Marcus and Julian, explicitly discussing the payment of five million dollars in offshore crypto-currency in exchange for the stolen beta data.
But the killing blow was the final document: the technical breakdown of the fabricated audit. The screens highlighted the invisible digital watermark Sloane had embedded in the file—a watermark that proved, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Julian Vance had published a completely fake, honey-potted document to intentionally manipulate the United States stock market.
The entire gala erupted into absolute, chaotic pandemonium.
"What is this?!" Julian roared, whirling around to look at the screens, the color completely draining from his arrogant face. He turned his furious, dead eyes on Marcus. "You idiot! You brought me fabricated files!"
"I didn't know!" Marcus stammered, raising his hands defensively, his knees literally buckling beneath him as he backed away from the stage. "David, please—"
David gracefully ascended the stairs to the stage, moving with the absolute, uncompromising weight of an untouchable king. He didn't take the microphone from Julian; he didn't need to. His voice carried with lethal, chilling authority.
"You didn't expose a fraud, Julian," David said, his words echoing clearly through the silent, captivated room. "You bought a forged, digitally watermarked document. Marcus didn't give you real projections; he gave you the bait. And by utilizing his stolen files to attempt a hostile corporate takeover and illegally short my stock, you just made yourself an accessory to federal wire fraud and market manipulation."
"FBI! Nobody move!"
The command thundered through the grand ballroom. Dozens of heavily armed federal agents from the SEC and the White Collar Crimes Division swarmed the room. Laser sights danced across Julian’s bespoke suit and Marcus’s terrified face.
"Julian Vance, Marcus Sterling, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, market manipulation, and wire fraud," the lead agent announced, marching onto the stage and violently pulling their arms behind their backs, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto their wrists.
Marcus began sobbing hysterically, forced to his knees on the hardwood stage. The cold steel bit into his wrists as he looked out at the thousands of peers who were staring at him with absolute, unadulterated disgust.

David looked down at the broken man who had once been his best friend. There was no hatred in his eyes. There was absolutely nothing at all.
"You made your choice, Marcus," David said coldly, turning his back on him and walking down the stairs to take my hand. "Enjoy federal prison."
