Chapter 1 - The Equation of Betrayal

The man on the other end of the phone was Alexander Sterling.
Seven years ago, when Apex Biotech was nothing more than a brilliant algorithm and a whiteboard of molecular structures in my cramped apartment, Alexander had offered to fully fund my research. He was the ruthless, visionary CEO of Sterling Pharmaceuticals. He saw my genius immediately. But Tristan had panicked. Tristan knew that if I partnered with a titan like Alexander, there would be no room for a charismatic, empty-suited middleman. Tristan had manipulated my insecurities, isolated me, and convinced me that Alexander wanted to steal my work, ensuring I built the empire exclusively with him.
"I'm listening, Zoe," Alexander’s deep, measured voice hummed through the receiver, cutting through the chilly San Francisco night air.
"Tristan has been sleeping with his lab assistant," I stated, my voice completely devoid of the devastation a bride was supposed to feel. "He's planning to marry me to solidify his fifty-percent equity claim, and then slowly edge me out of my own company. I want to trigger the catastrophic breach clause in the foundational patent charter."
Alexander let out a low, dark chuckle that sent a shiver of anticipation down my spine. "I have waited seven years for you to finally realize you were dating a parasite, Zoe. What are your orders?"
"I am transferring the exclusive licensing rights of the Apex algorithms to Sterling Pharmaceuticals, effective immediately," I commanded, watching through the bar window as Tristan bought Tessa a drink, oblivious to the fact that his entire net worth was evaporating. "I want your forensic accountants to quietly dismantle Tristan’s corporate standing. And Alexander?"
"Yes, Doctor?"
"I need you in the front row on the twenty-third. Wear a dark suit. We have a funeral to attend."
For the next thirty days, I delivered an Oscar-worthy performance. I tasted wedding cakes, finalized the floral arrangements, and smiled brightly while Tristan paraded me around investor dinners. Every time he kissed my cheek, every time he called me his "beautiful genius," I thought about the screenshots hidden in my encrypted drive. I can't marry her. But as compensation, I'll give you all my devotion.

While Tristan was busy sneaking Tessa into boutique hotels during his "extended board meetings," I was sitting in Alexander’s towering glass office, signing the lethal, ironclad documents that legally transferred every single patent I had ever authored out of Apex Biotech and into a new, impenetrable holding company.
Tristan thought he controlled the board. He forgot that without my patents, Apex Biotech was just an empty building full of expensive microscopes.
