Chapter 5 - The True Visionary

One year later.
The crisp, cool air of the San Francisco bay whipped through the open balcony doors of my new corner office at Sterling-Hastings Innovations. I stood by the glass, holding a cup of coffee, looking out over the empire I had finally built on my own terms.
Tristan’s descent into ruin had been spectacular and absolute. Without my technology to prop him up, the board of Apex Biotech fired him and dissolved the company to avoid bankruptcy. He was sued by multiple investors for the fraudulent misuse of corporate funds, drowning in millions of dollars of legal debt. Tessa had abandoned him the exact second his corporate credit cards were frozen, vanishing into obscurity. He was a cautionary tale, entirely exiled from the tech industry.
The heavy glass door to my office clicked open.
Alexander walked in, wearing a sharp suit and a genuine, breathtaking smile. He wasn't a man who needed to steal the spotlight or manipulate my insecurities. He was a man who looked at my brilliance and matched it with absolute, unwavering respect. Over the past twelve months, our professional partnership had blossomed into an incredibly profound, powerful romance.
"The clinical trials for the new synthetic protein just cleared the FDA’s phase two review," Alexander announced, walking over and wrapping his arms securely around my waist. He pressed a soft kiss to the side of my neck. "The board is ecstatic. You are a genius, Dr. Hastings."
"We make a very good team, Mr. Sterling," I smiled, leaning back against his solid chest, feeling a radiant, overwhelming sense of peace.
I looked down at the massive, flawless diamond resting on my left ring finger—a ring given to me by a man who actually knew my worth.
Tristan had thought I was nothing more than a naive scientist who would quietly hand over her empire in the name of love. He thought he was writing the story, casting himself as the brilliant king and me as the disposable pawn.

He didn't realize that I was the one who built the board. He tried to play a game of checkers with a woman playing chess, and in the end, I didn't just take his king.
I flipped the entire table.
