Chapter 3 - The Predator's Promise

By week eight, a miraculous transformation had occurred. Leo, Silas, and Maya had doubled in weight. They were breathing on their own, their tiny hands wrapping around my fingers with a strength that defied their premature birth. The doctors informed me that within a month, they would be cleared to go home.

But I had no home to go to. Ethan had officially changed the locks on our Manhattan penthouse, sending my few remaining belongings to a cheap storage unit in Queens. He had filed for a rapid divorce, claiming abandonment, and his lawyers had sent a pathetic settlement offer of fifty thousand dollars, demanding full custody of the triplets once they were discharged, purely to use them as PR props for his "family man" image.

I was sitting in the hospital's private rooftop garden, holding a sleeping Maya against my chest, when Alexander walked out through the glass doors. The autumn wind ruffled his dark hair. Over the past two months, the cold, untouchable billionaire had shown me a side of himself the world never saw. He was gentle with my children. He looked at me not with pity, but with a profound, growing adoration that terrified and thrilled me in equal measure.

"Ethan’s legal team sent another email," Alexander said, sitting on the bench beside me. He didn't sit far away; his thigh brushed against mine, a comforting, steady presence. "They are threatening to call Child Protective Services, claiming you are mentally unstable and homeless, to secure custody of the children before his big Gala launch in Los Angeles next week."

I tightened my arms around Maya, my blood boiling. "He doesn't want them. He never wanted them. He just wants to look like a tragic, heroic father to his investors."

"He will never touch a single hair on their heads," Alexander growled, his voice vibrating with a protective fury that made my breath hitch. "I have already transferred ownership of a secure, private estate in the Hamptons into an irrevocable trust under your name. You are a multi-millionaire on paper as of this morning. His homeless claim is completely invalid."

I turned to look at him, my eyes wide with shock. "Alexander, you can't do that. You have already paid millions in medical bills. You can't just give me an estate. I can't accept that."

Alexander reached out, his large hand gently cupping my jaw. His thumb brushed softly across my cheekbone. The air between us suddenly felt thick, charged with an undeniable, electric tension that had been building for weeks.

"I can do whatever I want, Claire," he murmured, his stormy gray eyes searching my face. "And what I want is to protect you. What I want is to wake up every morning and see you smiling. You have spent your entire life shrinking yourself to fit into Ethan's pathetic, small world. It is time you stepped into an empire that is actually worthy of you."

He leaned in closer. "Come to the Los Angeles Gala with me next week. Let me put a ring on your finger. A real one. Let me stand beside you as your partner, and let's tear his kingdom down to the foundation."

"A fake engagement to ruin his PR?" I asked, my heart pounding so hard I was sure he could hear it.

"Nothing about how I feel about you is fake, Claire," Alexander whispered, his gaze dropping to my lips. "I am absolutely, completely captivated by you. Let me prove it."

Before I could overthink the complications, before I could let the ghosts of my past trauma dictate my future, I leaned forward and pressed my lips to his. Alexander let out a low groan, his hand sliding to the back of my neck, kissing me with a fierce, consuming passion that wiped Ethan Mercer from my memory completely. It wasn't the kiss of a scared, abandoned wife. It was the kiss of an Empress claiming her throne.

"I'll go to the Gala," I breathed against his lips. "Let's burn him to the ground."
