Chapter 5 - The Unbreakable Crown

One year later.

The crisp autumn breeze swept off the Atlantic Ocean, rustling the golden leaves of the massive oak trees surrounding our sprawling Hamptons estate. I stood on the expansive wooden deck, wrapping a soft cashmere shawl around my shoulders, breathing in the scent of saltwater and absolute peace.

The past twelve months had been a whirlwind of justice and immense joy. The fallout from the Los Angeles Gala had been spectacular. Ethan Mercer, stripped of his stolen wealth and facing a mountain of federal charges for corporate fraud, was sentenced to eight years in a white-collar penitentiary. His company was completely liquidated, and the assets were absorbed by Alexander's empire. Ethan had signed away his parental rights during the divorce proceedings in a desperate, failed attempt to secure a lighter prison sentence. He was completely, permanently erased from our lives.

Behind me, the sliding glass doors opened.

Alexander stepped out onto the deck. He wasn't wearing his intimidating, billion-dollar boardroom suits. He was wearing a soft gray sweater and jeans, and in his strong arms, he effortlessly carried two babbling, laughing one-year-olds—Leo and Silas. Trailing right behind him, holding fiercely onto his pant leg as she took unsteady, clumsy steps, was Maya.

My heart swelled until I thought it might burst. The fragile, two-pound micro-preemies who had fought for their lives in glass boxes were now thriving, vibrant, chaotic toddlers who filled every single corner of this massive estate with light.

"They are conspiring against me," Alexander chuckled, pressing a kiss to the top of Leo's dark curls before setting the boys down on the deck. Maya immediately demanded to be picked up, raising her chubby arms, and Alexander scooped her up with a tenderness that still took my breath away. "They refuse to eat their pureed carrots, and Maya just tried to throw my phone into the koi pond."

I laughed, walking over and wrapping my arms around his waist, resting my head against his chest. "They take after their father. They don't take orders from anyone."

Alexander smiled, his stormy gray eyes melting into a pool of warm, endless devotion. Six months ago, in a beautiful, private ceremony in a Tuscan vineyard, Alexander had legally adopted the triplets and we had exchanged vows. He was not just their savior; he was their true father in every sense of the word.

He leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my lips. "I love you, Claire. More than I ever thought I was capable of loving anything."

"I love you too," I whispered against his mouth.

I looked out over the rolling green lawns of our estate, listening to the joyful squeals of my children as they chased a butterfly across the grass. Ethan had tried to bury me. He had left me in the dark, bleeding and terrified, assuming I would simply fade away into nothingness.

He didn't realize that when you try to bury a woman with a will to survive, you are only planting a seed. I had grown through the dirt, broken through the concrete, and blossomed into a queen. And standing here, wrapped in the arms of the most powerful, loving man in the world, surrounded by my beautiful children, I knew that my empire was finally, permanently unbreakable.
