Chapter 2 - The Empty Kingdom

The next morning, at exactly 9:00 AM, Flynn arrived at the hospital. He was holding a cheap plastic bag containing off-the-shelf postpartum vitamins and a bouquet of wilting, generic corner-store carnations. He walked down the corridor with the smug, relaxed posture of a man who believed he had successfully managed a minor corporate inconvenience. He fully expected to find a weeping, broken wife who would tearfully accept his meager financial compensation and silently step aside so he could parade his mistress around high society.
He pushed open the heavy wooden door to my delivery suite.
He stopped dead in his tracks. The room was completely empty. The hospital bed was stripped to the mattress. The monitors were turned off. There was no baby. There was no wife.
The only thing sitting in the center of the sterile, bare mattress was a thick, black leather folder embossed with the logo of Phoebe’s elite law firm.
Flynn dropped the cheap vitamins onto the linoleum floor. He rushed forward, his heart suddenly hammering against his ribs, and flipped the folder open. He expected a ransom demand. He expected a hysterical letter begging him to come back.
Instead, he found a Notice of Immediate Eviction for the Manhattan penthouse, a digital timestamp proving that the locks had been changed at 4:00 AM, and a formal Declaration of Financial Insolvency.
"What the hell is this?" Flynn whispered, his hands trembling as he flipped to the second page.
It was a bank statement. His primary checking account, which usually held millions in liquid cash, showed a balance of exactly $0.00. The corporate Black Card he used to buy Selina’s designer bags was flagged with a bright red ACCOUNT TERMINATED watermark.
Panic, raw and suffocating, finally pierced through his arrogant armor. He pulled out his phone and frantically dialed his wealth manager.
"David! What is happening with the accounts?" Flynn shouted, pacing the empty hospital room.
"Mr. Vance," the wealth manager replied, his voice cold and legally detached. "Your access to the Vance Master Trust has been permanently revoked. According to Section 4, Paragraph B of the restructuring agreement you signed four years ago, any documented instance of infidelity or external heirs immediately triggers a total asset reversion to the primary architect of the trust. Your wife."
"She can't do that!" Flynn roared, kicking a medical cart across the room. "I am the CEO! My name is on the building!"
May you like
"Your name is on the signage, sir," David corrected smoothly. "But Mabel owns the concrete. I advise you to secure a public defender. Your corporate credit lines are being audited for the funds you embezzled to support Ms. Selina's lifestyle. Have a good day."
The line went dead. Flynn stood in the center of the empty hospital room, the wilting carnations crushed beneath his expensive Italian leather shoes, finally realizing that the woman he thought he had discarded was the only thing keeping him from plunging into the abyss.
