Chapter 5 - The Empress and Her Heir

One year later.

The summer sun poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows of my corner office, casting a warm, golden glow over the massive mahogany desk. The signage on the front of the skyscraper no longer read Vance Enterprises. It was now Sterling Holdings, operating efficiently, cleanly, and massively profitably under my direct control.

I sat in my leather chair, reviewing a quarterly earnings report, but my attention was constantly drawn to the plush, custom-built playpen in the corner of the office.

My daughter, Aurora, was sitting happily among a pile of colorful blocks. She was brilliant, thriving, and absolutely perfect. She had my fierce independence and a laugh that brought genuine joy to everyone who met her. She didn't have a father, but she had a mother who owned the world and would burn it down to keep her safe.

There was a soft knock on the glass door. Phoebe walked in, holding a sleek silver tablet, looking entirely satisfied.

"The final filings are complete, Madam CEO," Phoebe smiled, taking a seat across from me. "The divorce is absolute. He has zero parental rights, zero claims to the estate, and a permanent restraining order preventing him from coming within fifty miles of you or Aurora."

"And his current status?" I asked, not out of malice, but simple administrative curiosity.

"He took a plea deal to avoid a twenty-year sentence for the embezzlement," Phoebe replied, pulling up a digital file. "He is currently serving six years in a minimum-security federal facility in upstate New York. He is working in the prison laundry room. Selina's true baby daddy refused to claim her, and she is currently facing her own charges for receiving stolen corporate funds."

I nodded slowly, closing the quarterly report on my desk. The ghost of Flynn Vance no longer haunted my mind. He was a footnote in my history, a minor miscalculation that had ultimately forced me to realize the absolute magnitude of my own power.

I stood up from my desk, the sharp click of my designer heels echoing on the marble floor, and walked over to the playpen. I reached down and lifted Aurora into my arms. She giggled, grabbing a fistful of my silk blazer, resting her soft cheek against my shoulder.

"We have a board meeting in ten minutes, little one," I whispered, kissing her dark curls as she looked out over the sprawling, breathtaking Manhattan skyline.

Flynn had walked into my hospital room believing he could buy my surrender for two hundred thousand dollars. He didn't understand that he had walked into the lair of an architect. He thought he was purchasing his freedom.

Instead, he financed his own spectacular destruction, leaving the empire exactly where it belonged—in the hands of the Empress and her true heir.
