Chapter 2 - The Audit and The Ousting

By 9:00 a.m., the corporate headquarters of Morgan Events Group was a synchronized machine of absolute destruction. I had spent twelve years letting Julian act as the charismatic face of the company, letting him take the credit while I managed the unglamorous spreadsheets. He thought my preference for the background meant I was weak. He failed to realize that the person controlling the numbers controls the entire empire.
When Julian and Chloe desperately tried to badge into the glass-walled lobby thirty minutes after I left them at the diner, their keycards flashed red.
I stood in the center of the atrium, flanked by our lead corporate attorney, Marcus, and two uniformed security guards. The entire office staff, who had already been briefed on the sudden "restructuring," watched in stunned silence as Julian banged his fist against the tempered glass doors.
I gave the security guard a nod. He opened the door just wide enough for Marcus to step forward.
"Julian, Chloe," Marcus announced smoothly, handing them each a thick manila envelope. "These are your official termination notices. Because the internal audit has uncovered undeniable proof of financial embezzlement, your severance packages are null and void. You are forbidden from stepping foot on Morgan Events Group property, contacting any of our clients, or accessing the corporate servers. If you attempt to do so, you will be arrested for trespassing and corporate espionage."
"You can't do this, Victoria!" Julian shouted through the gap in the door, completely abandoning his polished CEO persona. "I built this company's client base! You need me!"
"I need a Chief Operating Officer who doesn't use company capital to finance his infidelity," I replied coldly, stepping up beside Marcus. "Your desk has already been cleared. Your personal items will be mailed to whatever cheap motel you can afford now that your corporate accounts are frozen. Goodbye, Julian."
I turned my back on them and walked toward the elevators. Behind me, I could hear Chloe sobbing, begging the security guards to let her in to get her favorite potted plant. It was pathetic, and for a fleeting second, a wave of profound sorrow washed over me—grief for the sister I thought I had, and the husband I thought I knew. But the sorrow was instantly incinerated by the protective rage of a woman who refused to be a victim.
The next few weeks were a relentless, grueling deep-dive into the company's financials. With the help of a forensic accounting firm, we meticulously tracked every single receipt, invoice, and expense report Julian had signed off on. The thirty-eight thousand dollars I had found on my birthday was just the tip of a rotten iceberg.
Over a three-year period, Julian had slowly and methodically siphoned over one hundred and twenty thousand dollars from the family trust. He had created phantom vendors, approved inflated invoices for Chloe’s "event designs," and routed the excess cash into a hidden offshore account. He wasn't just a cheater; he was a calculated, predatory thief who had exploited my absolute trust in him.
My parents, devastated by the betrayal, cut Chloe off entirely. When she showed up at their suburban home begging for a loan to cover her rent, my mother handed her a packed suitcase of her childhood belongings and shut the door in her face. The family that Chloe had relied on for unconditional bailouts had finally seen her true colors.

Meanwhile, Julian was served with divorce papers. He hired a sleazy, discount attorney, demanding fifty percent of my assets and attempting to claim that his firing was "wrongful termination." He thought he could bully me into a settlement. He thought I would eventually crumble under the emotional weight of a public divorce.
He was severely underestimating the woman he had married.
