Chapter 5 - A New Era

One year later.

The ballroom at the Grand Plaza was bathed in warm, golden light. A string quartet played softly in the background as three hundred of the city’s most elite clients, philanthropists, and vendors mingled under towering crystal chandeliers. It was the annual gala for Morgan Events Group, and it was the most successful quarter in the history of the company.

I stood near the grand staircase, wearing a stunning, custom-tailored emerald gown. I wasn't hiding behind a clipboard or avoiding the cameras anymore. I was the active CEO, and the industry had quickly realized that the brilliant, flawless execution of Morgan Events Group had always been my doing. Without Julian’s constant financial drain and arrogant mismanagement, the company had expanded into two new cities and doubled its revenue.

"You look absolutely terrifying, and incredibly beautiful," a deep, warm voice said from behind me.

I turned and smiled as Liam handed me a glass of champagne. Liam was a brilliant, highly respected forensic architect I had met during a massive venue renovation project six months ago. He was nothing like Julian. Liam didn't need to be the center of attention. He possessed a quiet, grounded confidence, and he treated my ambition with profound respect, not intimidation. He celebrated my power; he didn't try to steal it.

"I was just admiring the profit margins of tonight's event," I joked, clinking my glass against his.

"Spoken like a true spreadsheet queen," Liam laughed, his eyes crinkling with genuine affection. He reached out, gently tucking a stray curl behind my ear. His touch was warm, safe, and entirely honest. "Happy thirty-sixth birthday, Victoria."

I took a sip of the champagne, letting the bubbly sweetness wash over my tongue. I thought back to exactly one year ago—the dark parking garage, the crushing betrayal, the sudden realization that my entire life was a lie. It felt like a lifetime away.

Far away from the glittering lights of the Grand Plaza, Julian was working a night shift as a low-level logistics dispatcher for a trucking company, a large portion of his meager paycheck automatically garnished to repay his "executive loan" to my firm. Chloe had moved to a different state, working at a chain restaurant, entirely cut off from the luxury and privilege she had taken for granted. They had tried to destroy me, but they had only succeeded in destroying themselves.

"Are you okay?" Liam asked softly, noticing my brief moment of reflection.

I looked up at the man standing in front of me, feeling the solid, unbreakable foundation of the empire I had built with my own two hands. I had taken the worst moment of my life and turned it into the ultimate victory.

"I am exactly where I am supposed to be," I smiled, wrapping my arm through his and stepping confidently into the center of the ballroom. "It's going to be a perfect year."
