Chapter 3 - The Purge

Adrian stumbled backward as if he had been physically struck.

Vanessa, who had been standing frozen near the edge of the stage, tried to slip away into the crowd.

"Ms. Reed," I called out.

She froze.

"You don't need to sneak out," I told her. "Security will escort you. You are also fired. I suggest you take that silver dress and find a new career, because you will never work in corporate America again."

Vanessa burst into tears, her smug, poisonous smile entirely gone.

Then, I looked out at the audience.

I found the Vice President who had laughed when Adrian shoved me to the floor.

"Mr. Sterling," I said, my voice turning to ice.

The VP went rigid.

"Clean out your desk by midnight," I told him. "You’re fired."

I scanned the crowd, meeting the eyes of every executive who had snickered, clapped, or looked away while I was bleeding on the floor.

"Anyone else who believes that assaulting a woman is a punchline can join them."

No one moved.

No one laughed.

They finally understood exactly who was in charge.
