Chapter 5 - The True CEO

Six months later.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows of the CEO’s corner office on the sixtieth floor.

I was wearing a tailored white suit and a pair of flawless designer heels.

There were no bruises on my arms.

Adrian had been convicted of felony assault and corporate fraud, after my audits revealed he had been embezzling company funds to pay for Vanessa’s luxury lifestyle.

He was currently serving a five-year sentence in a state penitentiary.

Vanessa had tried to sell her story to the tabloids, but my legal team had buried her in NDAs and defamation suits until she completely vanished from the city.

My office phone buzzed.

"Ms. Vale," my new assistant said through the intercom. "The board of directors is ready for your quarterly address."

"Thank you," I replied.

I didn't use the name Cross anymore.

I had reclaimed my maiden name, my power, and my life.

I walked out of the office and down the glass corridor toward the boardroom.

Adrian had told me to know my place.

He was right.

My place was at the head of the table.
