Chapter 4 - The Fall of the Emperor

The Castellano Tower loomed over the Chicago skyline, a towering monolith of glass and steel that represented everything Roman had stolen. At 6:00 AM, the sun was just beginning to cast a cold, gray light over the city. Dante’s private security contractors, dressed in unmarked tactical gear, had seamlessly infiltrated the building, quietly subduing Roman’s exhausted, confused security detail in the lobby and disabling the executive elevators.

I walked into the building wearing a sharp, tailored black suit that Dante had procured for me, my hair pulled back into a severe, uncompromising style. I looked nothing like the soft, compliant girl Roman had manipulated. I looked like my father.

Flanked by Dante, Vanessa, and six armed guards, I stepped out of the elevator onto the top floor. The massive, heavy oak doors of the executive boardroom were dead ahead. I didn't knock. I didn't hesitate. I pushed the doors open with a violent, echoing crash.

Roman was pacing frantically at the head of the long mahogany table, his tuxedo jacket discarded on the floor, his tie ripped off, his hair wildly disheveled. He was screaming into a satellite phone, his face purple with a terrifying, veins-bulging rage.

“I don't care what the routing error says! Find the goddamn money or I will personally skin you alive!” Roman roared into the receiver.

He froze as we walked into the room. The satellite phone slipped from his fingers, clattering loudly against the polished wood of the table. His bloodshot eyes darted from the armed guards, to Dante’s lethal, silent presence, to Vanessa, and finally, they locked onto me.

For a long, agonizing moment, his brain simply could not process the visual information. The arrogant emperor was entirely short-circuiting.

“Evelyn?” Roman choked out, stumbling backward until his hip hit the edge of the table. “What... what is this? What are you doing with Vale? Vanessa, you traitorous bitch, give me my ring!”

“I’m afraid the ring is completely hollow, Roman,” I said smoothly, walking directly to the opposite end of the boardroom table, claiming the space with absolute authority. “Just like your empire.”

“You...” Roman gasped, the realization hitting him like a freight train. The panic in his eyes was absolute, raw, and magnificent to witness. “You didn't just give her the ring out of spite. You planned this.”

“I didn't plan it. Dante planned it. I merely executed the final, glorious maneuver,” I corrected him mercilessly. “You thought I was so stupid, Roman. You thought you could parade your mistress in front of three hundred people, humiliate me, and maintain absolute control. You hid the keys to your entire criminal fortune on my finger because you assumed I was nothing more than a pretty, decorative idiot.”

“I’ll kill you!” Roman shrieked, lunging forward, his sanity completely snapping.

He didn't make it two steps. Dante moved with a terrifying, blurring speed, drawing a sleek, suppressed handgun from his shoulder holster and aiming it directly at the center of Roman’s forehead. The metallic click of the safety disengaging echoed loudly in the silent room.

“Take one more step toward her, Roman, and I will decorate this boardroom with your brains,” Dante whispered, his voice radiating a chilling, absolute promise of violence.

Roman froze, his chest heaving, his hands trembling violently in the air. He collapsed back into his chair, entirely defeated, tears of pure, humiliated panic streaming down his face.

“You have absolutely nothing left, Roman,” I announced, projecting my voice so it carried the weight of a judge delivering a death sentence. “The offshore accounts are entirely drained. The seed phrases are burned. But more importantly, I submitted the unencrypted ledgers of your money laundering operations directly to the FBI an hour ago.”

Roman let out a pathetic, broken sob, burying his face in his hands.

“Because of your documented, undeniable fiduciary fraud, the Moretti succession clause has been legally triggered,” I continued, dropping a thick, signed legal dossier onto the mahogany table. “I am officially revoking the proxy trust. Castellano Shipping no longer exists. You are no longer the CEO. You are a broke, unemployed felon waiting for the federal agents who are currently riding the elevator up to this exact floor.”

Right on cue, the heavy boardroom doors swung open again. A dozen federal agents wearing windbreakers emblazoned with the FBI logo flooded into the room, their weapons drawn.

“Roman Castellano, you are under arrest for federal racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder,” the lead agent barked, moving swiftly to rip Roman out of his chair and slam him face-first onto the table. The heavy steel handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with a beautiful, ringing finality.

As the agents dragged a screaming, sobbing Roman toward the elevators, completely stripping him of his dignity, his wealth, and his freedom, he twisted his head to look at me one last time.

He had wanted to see me break in that ballroom. Instead, he was the one entirely shattered, weeping on the marble floor of the empire he had tried to steal.
