Chapter 2 - The Counteroffer

"You can't do this!" Grant shouted, leaping to his feet, his chair scraping violently against the hardwood floor. The polished, controlled negotiator was entirely gone, replaced by a hyperventilating fraud. "This is marital property! We have been married for eleven years! Half of that money is mine, and I will tie you up in litigation for the next decade to get it!"

"You won't be tying anyone up in litigation, Mr. Whitaker," the lead tax attorney interjected, adjusting his glasses and looking at Grant with undisguised pity. "Because a forensic audit initiated by your wife three weeks ago revealed that you leveraged twenty million dollars of her trust capital to secure high-risk commercial loans for your independent strategic development firm."

Brielle’s hand stopped touching her pregnant stomach. She sat up rigidly, her eyes darting between Grant and the attorneys. "Grant? What are they talking about?"

"Shut up, Brielle," Grant hissed, his chest heaving with panic as the walls of his reality violently caved in.

"He committed massive fiduciary fraud," I explained calmly, looking directly at the mistress who had thought she was stealing a king. "He used my family's money as collateral to fund his own failing business ventures, and he used the diverted dividends to buy you designer clothes, luxury vacations, and whatever else it took to convince you he was a billionaire."

I turned my attention back to my husband. "By revoking my capital, the bank is calling those high-risk commercial loans due immediately. You are in default, Grant. You are completely, utterly bankrupt, and the federal authorities have already been notified of the wire fraud."

Grant stumbled backward, grabbing the edge of the table to keep from collapsing. He had spent the entire evening believing he was a master manipulator, carefully orchestrating a psychological trap to force me into submission. He didn't realize that I had let him walk blindly into a slaughterhouse of my own design.
