Chapter 3 - The Lobby

It was a Tuesday afternoon when his black town car pulled up to the gravel driveway of Rosewood House.
I was standing behind the mahogany front desk, reviewing a ledger.
The bell above the door chimed.
I didn't look up immediately.
"Excuse me," a familiar voice said. "I have a three o'clock meeting with the owner."
I froze.
Four years.
I slowly raised my head.
Nathan was standing there in a tailored gray suit.
He looked older. Tired. The arrogance that used to define him had been replaced by a quiet desperation.
He looked at me.

He stopped breathing.
"No," he whispered, his briefcase slipping from his hand and hitting the hardwood floor. "It can't be."
