Chapter 4 - The Two Heartbeats

"Hello, Nathan," I said, my voice perfectly steady.

He stumbled forward, tears instantly filling his eyes.

"I looked everywhere," he choked out. "Everywhere. I never stopped looking."

"You should have looked at your own marriage while you were in it," I replied coldly.

"Please," he begged, reaching across the desk. "I was a fool. I lost everything when you left. Let me fix it."

Before I could answer, the wooden door behind the desk swung open.

"Mommy!"

Two four-year-old children ran into the lobby.

Leo had my dark hair.

Clara had Nathan's exact hazel eyes.

Nathan froze.

He looked at the boy. Then at the girl.

Then at me.

He did the math in his head. Four years.

His face completely crumbled.
