Chapter 2 - The Test Results That Changed Everything

The toxicology results came back just before dawn.

I was sitting alone in a consultation room, staring at a vending machine I had not touched, when Detective Laura Bennett entered.

She was in her forties, calm-eyed, and carried the kind of silence that made people tell the truth simply to fill it.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said, sitting across from me, “I need to ask about your husband’s relationship with Emily Davis.”

I folded my hands.

“What did the tox screen show?”

She watched me for a second.

“You already know something.”

“I know his electrolyte imbalance was not normal.”

“That is not what I asked.”

“No,” I said. “I did not know he was at her apartment until tonight.”

Detective Bennett opened a thin folder.

“Mr. Carter had a mixture of substances in his system. Some may be consistent with medication, but others are not accounted for by any prescribed treatment.”

My stomach tightened.

“Was he poisoned?”

“We are investigating.”

“Was it intentional?”

“We are investigating that too.”

The careful wording told me more than a direct answer could.

I leaned forward.

“Did Emily call the ambulance?”

“She did.”

“How long after he collapsed?”

The detective’s expression changed slightly.

“That is one of the questions we have.”

I closed my eyes.

Jason might have betrayed me.

He might have lied to me for months.

But no one deserved to be left unconscious while someone decided whether calling for help was convenient.

“Can I see him?” I asked.

“Not yet. The doctors are stabilizing him.”

Before Detective Bennett could leave, the door opened.

My mother-in-law swept into the room, followed by my father-in-law.

“You are speaking to police now?” she demanded. “Are you trying to ruin Jason’s career?”

I stood.

“No. I am trying to make sure he survives.”

“Emily said Jason had a panic attack.”

Emily had spoken to them already.

Of course she had.

“She said Sarah has been accusing her of inappropriate things for months,” my mother-in-law added. “She said you attacked her in the hallway.”

I looked at the detective.

“I never touched her.”

Detective Bennett made a note.

My father-in-law leaned close to me.

“You have always resented Jason’s success. You gave up medicine and blamed him for it.”

The words hurt because part of them was true.

I had blamed Jason.

But not for the reason his father thought.

I blamed him because I gave up pieces of myself to keep our marriage alive, while he quietly gave pieces of our marriage away.

Before I could answer, Dr. Cole entered.

“Jason is awake,” he said. “Disoriented, but awake.”

I went to the trauma bay immediately.

Jason looked smaller in the hospital bed.

His skin was gray. His lips were dry. Wires crossed his chest. His eyes opened slowly when he heard my footsteps.

“Sarah,” he whispered.

I stopped beside the bed.

For a second, neither of us said anything.

Then he looked around the room.

“Where’s Emily?”

Detective Bennett stepped forward.

“That is what we would like to discuss.”

Jason frowned.

“What happened?”

“You collapsed in Ms. Davis’s apartment,” she said. “What do you remember?”

His eyes moved toward me.

Then away.

“I was there to talk.”

“At three in the morning?”

He swallowed.

“Yes.”

“What did you consume?”

“Wine. Maybe water.”

“Anything else?”

“No.”

“Did Ms. Davis give you medication?”

“No.”

The detective placed a photograph on his tray table.

It showed a small glass bottle recovered from Emily’s kitchen trash.

Jason stared at it.

His face changed.

“I’ve seen that before.”

“What is it?” I asked.

He looked at me again.

And suddenly, he looked ashamed.

“Emily said it was a supplement. She put drops in my drinks sometimes. For stress.”

My breath caught.

“Sometimes?”

Jason nodded weakly.

“She said it would help me sleep.”

Detective Bennett asked, “How long has she been giving it to you?”

“I don’t know. A few weeks.”

My mother-in-law, standing in the doorway, gasped.

“You let that woman drug you?”

Jason’s eyes filled with tears.

“She said she loved me.”

The room went silent.

There it was.

The truth he had avoided.

Not just an affair.

A relationship built on lies, secrecy, and danger.

I should have felt victorious.

Instead, I felt tired.

Jason reached for my hand.

I stepped back.

“Sarah, I’m sorry.”

“You are alive,” I said. “Focus on that first.”

Later that morning, police obtained a warrant to search Emily’s apartment.

They found prescription medications not issued in her name, empty bottles of concentrated supplements, altered shipping labels, and a notebook hidden beneath her couch.

Inside were dates.

Times.

Jason’s name.

And chilling notes beside several entries.

More tired tonight.

He trusts me now.

Sarah still doesn’t know.

By noon, Emily was being questioned downtown.

But Detective Bennett returned with another piece of information.

“Mrs. Carter,” she said, “Emily’s notes mention your name more than once.”

I looked up.

“What kind of notes?”

The detective slid a photocopy across the table.

One sentence had been circled in red:

When Jason is weak enough, Sarah will finally leave him alone.

And suddenly, I understood.

May you like

Emily had not only wanted my husband.

She wanted to erase me from his life completely.
