Chapter 3 - The Affair That Became a Crime

The hospital kept Jason for observation.
His heart was stable. Surgery was no longer necessary. The early scan that frightened everyone had been reinterpreted after his electrolytes were corrected and more imaging was completed.
He had survived.
But survival did not make him innocent.
That afternoon, I went home for the first time since the ambulance call.
The house felt unfamiliar.
Jason’s shoes sat beside the front door. His suit jacket was draped over a chair. A mug of coffee he left untouched the previous morning rested near the sink.
I stood in the kitchen and wondered how many mornings I had looked at this life without truly seeing it.
My phone buzzed.
Emily had been released pending further investigation.
Then another message appeared.
Unknown Number:
You think you won because you are a doctor. You have no idea what Jason told me about you.
I stared at it.
A second message followed.
He said you never loved him. He said you only cared about being right.
For years, Jason had told me I was too guarded.
Too focused.
Too cold.
Maybe he told Emily the same thing to make himself feel less guilty.
But none of it explained why she gave him substances without his informed consent.
None of it explained the notes.
None of it explained why she appeared terrified when I said toxicology.
I forwarded the messages to Detective Bennett and Victoria Hayes, the attorney I contacted after the life I knew began cracking open.
Victoria called within minutes.
“Do not respond,” she said. “Save everything.”
“She knows I have spoken to police.”
“She is trying to make you emotional.”
“She wants me to look unstable.”
“Then don’t give her that.”
Victoria arrived at my house that evening.
She brought a legal pad, a suitcase, and the unmistakable energy of a woman preparing for war.
“Why the suitcase?” I asked.
“You are not sleeping here tonight.”
I looked around the room.
“This is my house.”
“It is. But your husband has been involved with a woman under investigation for possible poisoning, and she is now contacting you. You will stay somewhere safe while we secure the property.”
I wanted to argue.
Instead, I looked down at the wedding photograph above the fireplace.
Jason and I were smiling in the picture.
I remembered that day.
He told me he felt lucky.
I believed him.
“What about Jason?” I asked.
Victoria’s voice softened.
“That is his problem now.”
At the hotel, I opened the shared cloud account Jason and I used for household documents.
I had not planned to search his private files.
But he had already destroyed the boundary between private and secret.
What I found made my hands shake.
Emails between Jason and Emily.
At first, they were ordinary.
Work messages.
Late-night jokes.
Flirting disguised as project updates.
Then the tone changed.
Emily told Jason I was “watching him.”
Jason told Emily I had become “controlling.”
Emily wrote that I would “never let him be happy.”
And then, three weeks before his collapse, Jason sent her a message I read five times.
Sarah has money, connections, and a medical license. If she thinks something is wrong, she will destroy us.
Emily’s answer was brief.
Then we make sure she looks like the problem.
I felt sick.
There were additional messages.
Emily had encouraged Jason to confront me about my old medical career. She told him to say I was emotionally detached. She told him I was jealous and unstable.
Jason had agreed.
But the final message was from the night he collapsed.
Jason: What did you put in the drink?
Emily: Something to calm you down. Stop overreacting.
Jason: I can’t feel my hands.
Emily: You’re panicking. Lie down.
Then, eleven minutes later:
Jason: Emily, call someone.
No reply.
Seven minutes after that, she called emergency services.
She waited.
She watched him deteriorate.
And then she called for help only after realizing he might die.
I sent the screenshots to Detective Bennett.
Within an hour, she called.
“Mrs. Carter, do not delete anything. We are obtaining an emergency warrant.”
“Is Jason going to be charged too?”
There was silence.
“He may be a victim in one part of this case,” she said. “But his involvement in efforts to discredit you will be reviewed separately.”
When I ended the call, I sat alone on the hotel bed.
I expected tears.
They did not come.
Instead, I felt something much stronger.
A terrible, clean certainty.
Jason did not just betray me with Emily.
He helped her build a story where I was supposed to lose everything.

He only changed his mind when he became the target.
And by then, it was far too late.
