Chapter 2 - The True Benefactor

The heavy brass doors of the elevator slid open with a soft, echoing chime.

Four men in flawless, tailored black overcoats stepped into the drab courthouse hallway. Three were private security contractors, moving with the synchronized, predatory grace of men paid to make problems disappear. The fourth was Alexander Whitmore.

At thirty-eight, my older brother was a titan in the financial district. As the CEO of Whitmore Global Capital, his name was whispered in boardrooms with a mixture of profound reverence and absolute terror. He did not do press. He did not attend galas. He only acquired, dismantled, and conquered.

Nathaniel’s breath actually hitched. He physically stepped back, bumping into his attorney.

"Alexander Whitmore?" Nathaniel breathed, his arrogant composure instantly shattering. He frantically tried to smooth his posture, his eyes darting toward me. "Clare, what is he doing here? Move out of the way."

Alexander did not look at Nathaniel. He did not look at Vanessa, who was suddenly shrinking against the wall, or Evelyn, whose leather-gloved hands had begun to tremble.

My brother walked directly to me. He looked at the red-stamped divorce decree in my hand, and the icy, untouchable mask he wore for the rest of the world melted into absolute, protective warmth.

"Is it done, Clare?" Alexander asked softly.

"It's done, Alex," I replied, slipping the folder into my bag.

Nathaniel’s jaw dropped. His brain desperately tried to connect the quiet, accommodating woman he had just discarded to the apex predator standing in front of her.

"Alex?" Nathaniel choked out, his face turning the color of wet cement. "Clare... what are you talking about? How do you know Alexander Whitmore?"

I finally turned to look at the man who had spent nine years making me feel small.

"We share the same last name, Nathaniel," I said, my voice perfectly, terrifyingly calm. "I told you I was from a real estate family in Boston. You just never bothered to ask which one."
