Chapter 4 - The Tarmac

"Nathaniel, do something!" Vanessa shrieked, backing away from him as if his ruin were contagious. "Tell them it's a mistake! You told me she had nothing!"

"She has everything, you idiot!" Evelyn hissed, finally losing her polite veneer as she realized her son’s legacy had just been incinerated.

Nathaniel dropped to his knees on the scuffed courthouse floor, openly weeping, completely ignoring his mistress and his mother. He reached out, desperately grasping at the hem of my gray wool coat.

"Clare, I'm sorry!" he sobbed, a pathetic, broken shell of the visionary CEO he pretended to be. "I love you! I was wrong! Please, we can tear up the papers! We can go back to how it was!"

I looked down at him with ultimate, chilling indifference.

"I don't belong in the rooms you built, Nathaniel," the heiress of the Whitmore empire decreed. "And you can't afford the rent in mine."

I brushed his hand away and stepped back.

"Alexander," I said, turning to my brother. "I'm ready to leave now."

"Of course," Alexander murmured, offering me his arm while his security detail seamlessly boxed Nathaniel and his frantic attorney against the wall. "The jet is waiting at Teterboro. We can be in Paris by dinner."

I slipped my hand through my brother’s arm. I didn't look back as we walked toward the glass exit doors, leaving Nathaniel Pierce kneeling in the dust of his own shattered life, clutching a divorce decree that had just cost him the world.
