Chapter 4 - The Collapse of a Con Man

Ethan’s fingers slipped on the glass screen as he frantically dialed the direct, private number for David, the Chief Financial Officer of Cole-Bennett Hospitality Group. The phone rang three times before it connected.
“David! What the hell is going on with the banking portals?!” Ethan roared into the receiver, completely abandoning any sense of public decorum. “I’m standing at JFK and every single card I own is declining! Get the bank on the phone right now and fix this!”
There was a heavy, suffocating silence on the other end of the line.
When David finally spoke, his voice was completely devoid of the usual subservient, deferential tone he had used with Ethan for a decade. It was cold, clinical, and completely detached.
“I can't do that, Ethan.”
“What do you mean you can't do that?! I am the CEO of this company! I am ordering you to unlock my accounts!”
“You aren't the CEO anymore, Ethan. You were legally served with immediate termination papers twenty minutes ago via corporate email,” David replied. “Grace’s legal team just walked into the boardroom. She officially invoked the criminal fraud and morality clauses in your operating agreement.”
Ethan felt the floor drop out from beneath his expensive shoes. The bustling noise of the airport terminal seemed to fade into a high-pitched ringing in his ears. “Grace? Grace doesn't have the power to fire me! She owns nothing! I built this company from the ground up!”
“You ran this company into the ground eight years ago, Ethan,” David corrected him sharply, the truth finally coming to light. “Grace bought it. She is the sole owner of the anonymous holding company that holds one hundred percent of our corporate debt and seventy percent of the voting shares. She has always owned it. She just let you play the boss.”
Ethan staggered backward, bumping into a luggage cart. He couldn't breathe. The air felt thick and suffocating.
“Your corporate access is permanently revoked,” David continued ruthlessly. “Your personal accounts are locked pending a full federal investigation. The forensic auditors found the Tribeca loft lease. They found the Cartier watch. They found the quarter-million dollars you funneled into dummy marketing accounts to pay for your mistress. You didn't just cheat on your wife, Ethan. You embezzled federal funds. You’re entirely broke, and you're likely going to prison. Do not call this number again.”
The line went dead.
Ethan stood frozen in the middle of the terminal, the phone slipping from his trembling fingers and clattering onto the polished floor.
Vanessa, who had been listening to his panicked shouting, stepped forward. The glowing, triumphant mistress who had mocked Grace just an hour ago was now staring at a man whose entire existence had just been vaporized.
“Ethan,” Vanessa said, her voice sharp, high, and panicked. “Tell me you have the money for this trip. Tell me you still have the Tribeca loft.”
Ethan looked at her, his eyes hollow, dark, and utterly defeated. “She... Grace owns everything. She froze it all. We have nothing.”
Vanessa stared at him for three agonizing seconds, processing the reality that she had just blown up her own life to tether herself to a bankrupt fraud. The Maldives, the penthouses, the endless champagne—it was all a mirage, evaporating instantly under the harsh, fluorescent airport lights.
“I’m not doing this,” Vanessa snapped, her voice turning brittle and cold. “I didn't sign up to play nursemaid to a broke felon.”
“Vanessa, wait, please! I can call my lawyers, I can fix this—” Ethan begged, reaching for her arm.

She slapped his hand away. Without a single ounce of hesitation or sympathy, Vanessa grabbed her passport off the counter, adjusted her Birkin bag, turned on her heel, and walked swiftly toward the exit doors, abandoning him completely.
When Ethan raised his voice to shout her name, creating a massive scene, two armed airport security officers quietly stepped out of the shadows, grabbing him by the arms to forcibly escort him out of the VIP terminal.
