Chapter 5 - The Queen's Gambit

Six months later, the crisp, golden autumn sun was setting over the Manhattan skyline, casting a warm, victorious glow through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Cole-Bennett Hospitality Group’s executive boardroom.
The name on the heavy glass doors had been officially changed the week prior. It now simply read: Bennett Global.
Grace stood at the head of the massive marble conference table—the exact same table where Ethan had arrogantly shoved the divorce papers at her half a year ago. She was wearing a stunning, tailored emerald-green suit that projected absolute, untouchable power.
The fallout from the airport incident had been a spectacular, highly publicized bloodbath.
Without Grace’s silent financial protection and the massive PR machine she had funded, Ethan’s life had disintegrated with terrifying speed. The district attorney had formally indicted him on multiple counts of wire fraud and corporate embezzlement. Stripped of his wealth, his cars, and his properties, he was currently living in a cramped, depressing studio apartment in Queens, awaiting a federal trial that carried a mandatory minimum sentence.
Vanessa had attempted to return to her old marketing job, but the corporate world in New York was a very small, very unforgiving circle. Blacklisted and publicly humiliated as a gold-digger who had bet on the wrong horse, she had been forced to move back to her hometown in the Midwest, entirely erased from the luxury lifestyle she had so desperately craved.
Grace, however, had never felt more alive.
She had officially stepped out of the shadows and taken her rightful place as the active CEO of Bennett Global. Under her brilliant, ruthless leadership, the company’s profit margins had skyrocketed by thirty percent in the third quarter alone. She had purged the toxic, sycophantic executives Ethan had hired, replacing them with fiercely intelligent, fiercely loyal women who knew how to actually run an empire.
“The acquisition papers for the new London properties are fully executed, Grace,” Martin Hale said, walking into the boardroom and handing her a leather-bound folder. He smiled warmly, genuinely proud of the titan she had become.
“Excellent work, Martin,” Grace replied, signing the final page with her heavy Montblanc pen.
Just then, the boardroom doors swung open again. Julian, the brilliant, incredibly handsome lead architect Grace had recently hired to redesign their European boutique hotels, leaned against the doorframe. He possessed a quiet, grounded confidence that Ethan had never even comprehended. Julian didn't need to diminish Grace’s power to feel like a man; he was wildly, deeply attracted to it.
“Are you ready to get out of here, Madam CEO?” Julian asked, his dark eyes crinkling with a warm, genuine smile. “I managed to get us a corner table at Le Bernardin.”
Grace looked down at the massive, sprawling city below her. She thought about the woman she used to be—the silent, accommodating wife who had hidden her own brilliance to protect the fragile ego of a man who ultimately despised her for it. That woman was dead. In her place stood an absolute force of nature.

She capped her pen, picked up her coat, and walked toward the man waiting for her at the door.
“I’ve never been more ready,” Grace smiled, stepping confidently out of the boardroom and into the brilliant, limitless future she had built with her own two hands.
