Chapter 3 - The Architecture of Ruin

"Two years, Kalin," I said, stepping out from behind Silas. I kept the heavy jacket pulled tightly around my shoulders. I did not raise my voice, but the absolute silence of the room carried my words to every corner. "For two years, I let you parade me around like a trophy. I let you mock my family. I let you drag me by my hair."

"You owed me!" Kalin roared, losing whatever polished facade he had left. "Your father bankrupted his own firm! He came crawling to me for the debt restructuring! You belonged to me!"

"My father didn't bankrupt his firm," I replied, my voice dropping to a freezing calm. "You did."

Kalin froze.

I reached into the pocket of Silas’s jacket and pulled out a small, silver flash drive.

"You spent the last two years treating me like a decorative idiot," I said. "You assumed that because I was quiet, I was blind. But when you forced me to attend your late-night board meetings, when you made me sit silently in your home office while you entertained your mistresses, you always left your laptop open. You left your secure routing numbers on your desk. Because you never believed a Winslow was smart enough to understand them."

I held up the drive.

"Three weeks ago, I hired Silas’s forensic accounting team. We traced the corporate sabotage that nearly destroyed my father’s firm directly back to a shell company in the Cayman Islands. A shell company registered to you, Kalin."

The board of directors for Thorne Industries, seated at the front tables, began to stand up in a wave of panicked murmurs.

"That's a lie," Kalin stammered, his eyes darting frantically toward the exits. "It's corporate espionage. You have no proof!"

"I have the un-redacted ledgers," I said simply. "But that isn't the worst part, Kalin. To finance your hostile takeover of my family’s firm, you embezzled forty million dollars from the Thorne Industries employee pension fund."
