Chapter 5 - The Ascension

The heavy oak doors of the ballroom burst open again. This time, it wasn't a billionaire rivalry interrupting the gala. It was a dozen federal agents in windbreakers featuring the gold lettering of the FBI.
"Kalin Thorne!" the lead agent barked, flashing a badge. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and securities manipulation."
Kalin sobbed uncontrollably as they hauled him off his knees, yanking his arms behind his back and snapping cold steel handcuffs around his wrists. He begged, he pleaded, he screamed my name, but the agents dragged him out of the golden light of the ballroom and into the cold reality of a federal indictment.
Tamson was read her rights simultaneously, arrested as an accessory to the fraud. Her diamond pendant was confiscated on the spot as stolen property.
The ballroom was left in a state of absolute shock. The elites of Manhattan stared at me, no longer seeing a decorative liability, but a woman who had just orchestrated the most flawless, devastating corporate assassination in the city's history.
Silas turned to me. The harsh, calculating edge of his corporate persona softened, leaving only a deep, abiding respect.
"Your car is waiting downstairs, Ms. Winslow," Silas said gently, using my maiden name. It was the first time I had been addressed by it in two years. It sounded like music. "Your father is waiting for you at the estate. The debt is cleared. You are completely free."

"Thank you, Silas," I whispered, the weight of the last two years finally lifting off my chest, allowing me to take my first full breath.
I didn't look back at the broken glass. I didn't look at the stunned faces of the people who had done nothing to help me. I kept Silas Sterling’s jacket pulled tight across my shoulders, turned my back on the ashes of Kalin Thorne's empire, and walked out into the cool, clean air of the rest of my life.
