Chapter 3 - Grounded

The scene at the First-Class check-in counter of Air France had rapidly devolved from a portrait of wealthy privilege into a chaotic, humiliating public spectacle. While I sat comfortably in the executive lounge, Gerald’s security operatives—discreetly positioned throughout the terminal—were feeding me live audio and visual updates of the meltdown.

"I don't understand what you mean, declined," Jack’s voice echoed through my earpiece, shrill and dripping with panicked disbelief. He was leaning over the marble counter, his face flushed a dark, angry crimson, frantically waving his black metal credit card at the stoic airline agent. "There is no limit on that card. Run it again. The machine is broken."

"Sir, I have run the card three times," the agent replied, her voice projecting the practiced, icy patience reserved for unruly passengers. "The terminal is returning a 'Code 04: Capture Card' error. The issuing bank has not only declined the transaction for your oversized baggage fees, but they have explicitly instructed us to confiscate the card due to suspected fraud."

"Fraud?!" Jack shouted, his voice cracking, drawing stares from the long line of passengers forming behind them. "Do you know who I am? I am Dr. Jack Walker! I am the head of orthopedic surgery at—"

"I don't care if you're the Surgeon General, sir," the agent interrupted, thoroughly unimpressed. "Without a valid form of payment, I cannot check these bags, and I cannot issue your boarding passes. Please step aside."

The blonde woman—her name was Chloe, according to the dossier Gerald had compiled in record time—stepped forward, her perfectly glossed lips drawn into a tight, annoyed line. "Jack, what is going on? We are going to miss our flight to Paris. Just use another card. This is embarrassing."

"I... I am trying, Chloe!" Jack snapped, his charming facade entirely shattered, revealing the pathetic, high-strung coward beneath. He pulled out his phone, his hands shaking violently as he tried to open his banking app. He stared at the screen, his breath hitching audibly. "It's... it's all zero. The accounts are frozen. Everything is frozen."

Carol pushed her way to the front of the group, her heavy gold jewelry clinking. "Oh, don't be ridiculous, Jack. The bank probably flagged it because it's an international trip. Here," she said haughtily, pulling a gold card from her designer purse and slapping it onto the counter. "Put the baggage fees and the lounge passes on my account. Honestly, the incompetence of customer service these days."

The airline agent swiped Carol’s card. The machine beeped instantly. A harsh, negative tone.

"Declined," the agent stated flatly. "Insufficient funds."

Carol gasped, clutching her pearls in genuine shock. "That is impossible! I have over two hundred thousand dollars in that account!"

"Not anymore, Mother," Ashley whimpered from the back of the group. She was staring at her own phone, tears streaming down her face, her carefully curated makeup completely ruined. "My cards are declined too. And... and my assistant just texted me. There are security guards at my boutique. They’re changing the locks. They’re saying my lease was terminated for breach of contract. Jack, what is happening?!"

Jack didn't answer. He couldn't answer. He was staring blindly ahead, the horrifying realization finally cementing itself in his mind. The text message he had received, the empty bank accounts, the sudden, simultaneous financial collapse of his entire family—and the image of his quiet, unassuming wife standing on the glass walkway above them.

"It's Megan," Jack whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "She knows. She saw us."

"Megan?" Carol scoffed loudly, her face twisting into an ugly sneer. "That mousey little accountant? What could she possibly do? Cancel your shared debit card? Jack, be a man! Call your bank and fix this!"

"You don't understand, Mom!" Jack roared, completely losing his temper, a vein bulging dangerously in his forehead. "Everything was in her name! The house, the cars, the investments! She managed all the finances because I didn't have time! If she locked the accounts, we have absolutely nothing!"

Chloe, the mistress who had been promised a life of luxury and endless European vacations, slowly stepped back from the counter. Her eyes darted from the screaming mother, the crying sister, and the sweating, broke doctor. The illusion of the wealthy, stable family she was marrying into had evaporated in less than five minutes.

"Jack," Chloe said, her voice dropping to a cold, calculating register. "Are you telling me that the Paris trip, the hotel at the Ritz, the shopping spree... you can't pay for any of it?"

"Chloe, baby, please, just give me a few hours to sort this out," Jack pleaded, reaching for her hand. "I'll call my lawyers. I'll force her to unfreeze the assets. We can still—"

"Don't touch me," Chloe hissed, slapping his hand away with absolute disgust. "I am not spending my weekend stranded at DFW with your hysterical family while you fight your wife for an allowance. Call me when you aren't broke."

She grabbed her matching, un-checked Louis Vuitton suitcase, turned on her designer heel, and marched away toward the exit, abandoning the sinking ship the exact second she realized it was taking on water.

Jack watched her leave, entirely devastated, humiliated in front of hundreds of strangers. His family was weeping in the terminal, their luggage scattered around them, entirely stranded. But the nightmare was only just beginning. As Jack pulled out his phone to desperately dial my number for the fiftieth time, an urgent email notification popped onto his screen.

It was from the Chief of Medicine at Dallas General Hospital. The subject line read: URGENT: IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION OF CLINICAL PRIVILEGES.

The color completely drained from Jack's face. He dropped his phone onto the polished marble floor. It wasn't just his money that was gone. It was his entire life.
