Chapter 5 - The Ashes of an Empire

Three weeks later, the relentless, sweltering Texas heat beat down on the sprawling, manicured grounds of the Vanguard corporate estate on the outskirts of Dallas. I sat in a high-backed leather chair in my private, climate-controlled conservatory, overlooking a massive, crystal-clear reflection pool. I was holding a cup of Earl Grey tea, the delicate porcelain warm against my palms, enjoying a profound, unshakable peace that I hadn't felt in a decade. The heavy, suffocating mask of "Megan Walker" had been burned away, leaving behind the sharp, unyielding reality of Megan Vance.

Gerald walked into the conservatory, his footsteps silent on the marble floor. He stood at a respectful distance, holding a sleek black tablet, waiting for me to acknowledge him.

"Is it done, Gerald?" I asked softly, taking a slow sip of my tea.

"It is entirely concluded, Ms. Vance," Gerald replied, his voice a low, reassuring rumble. "The final divorce decree was signed by the judge this morning. Because Jack Walker is currently incarcerated in federal holding pending trial and failed to secure legal counsel—due to his assets being completely frozen—the court granted an absolute default judgment in your favor."

I nodded slowly, looking out at the reflection pool. "And the family?"

"The fallout has been absolute," Gerald reported, tapping the screen of his tablet. "Carol Walker was formally evicted from the Dallas estate last Tuesday. With her accounts frozen and the massive fraud debt reinstated, she was forced to declare Chapter 7 bankruptcy. She is currently living in a rented room in a motel near the interstate. Ashley Walker's boutique was liquidated to cover her outstanding wholesale debts to our subsidiaries. Her inventory was seized, and she is facing multiple lawsuits from independent vendors."

A dark, cold satisfaction settled deep in my chest. They had laughed at me in the airport. They had thought my kindness was weakness, my silence was stupidity. They had cheered while my husband kissed another woman, entirely confident in their untouchable privilege. Now, they were learning exactly how cold the real world was when the sun stopped shining on them.

"They attempted to contact you, of course," Gerald continued, his tone carrying a note of professional disgust. "Carol and Ashley showed up at the Vanguard corporate headquarters yesterday, demanding to speak with you. They were crying, claiming they had no idea Jack was having an affair, begging for you to show them the 'Christian mercy' you always possessed."

I let out a soft, humorless laugh. "What did you do?"

"I had corporate security escort them off the premises under threat of a trespassing warrant," Gerald answered smoothly. "I also informed them that any further attempts to contact you would result in Vanguard's legal team pursuing aggressive civil litigation against them for complicity in marital asset fraud. They left immediately and have not returned."

"Good," I said, setting my teacup down on the small glass table beside me.

"There is one final matter, Ms. Vance," Gerald said, stepping closer and offering me the tablet.

I took the screen. It was a recorded video message, captured through a secure communications line at the federal detention center. I pressed play.

Jack’s face appeared on the screen, and the sight of him made me physically recoil for a fraction of a second, not out of fear, but out of sheer, overwhelming pity. He looked destroyed. He was wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, his hair was greasy and unkempt, and the charming, arrogant spark that had defined his eyes for ten years was completely, irrevocably dead. He looked like a hollow, terrified shell of a man.

"Megan," Jack whispered into the camera, his voice cracking, tears instantly spilling over his cheeks. He looked desperate, shattered. "Megan, please. I know you're watching this. I know you control everything. Please... I'm so sorry. I was stupid. I was arrogant. I didn't know what I was doing. Chloe meant nothing to me, she abandoned me the second the money was gone. You were the only one who ever truly loved me."

He pressed his hand against the glass of the visitation booth, sobbing heavily.

"They're going to put me away for twenty years, Megan," he begged, hyperventilating. "I'll die in here. I can't survive this. Please, I know you can make this go away. I know your father's lawyers can fix this. I'll do anything. I'll spend the rest of my life making it up to you. Just please... please don't leave me here in the dark."

The video cut out, returning to a black screen.

I sat in the quiet conservatory, staring at my reflection in the dark glass of the tablet. Ten years ago, the sight of Jack crying would have broken my heart. I would have moved heaven and earth, spent millions of dollars, and compromised my own morals just to make him smile again. I had built an empire of lies just to protect his fragile ego.

But as I looked at the pathetic, broken man begging for his life on that screen, I felt absolutely nothing. The love had been entirely burned out of me the moment he kissed another woman in front of his cheering family, looking up at the glass walkway with that arrogant, untouchable smirk.

He had wanted a life without me. I simply gave him exactly what he asked for.

I handed the tablet back to Gerald, my face a mask of immovable stone.

"Delete the file, Gerald," I commanded, my voice echoing with the absolute, terrifying authority of the Vanguard legacy. "Block all future communications from the detention center. Instruct the legal team to refuse any plea negotiations regarding his federal charges. Let him serve every single day of his sentence."

"Understood, Ms. Vance," Gerald bowed slightly, taking the tablet. "Will there be anything else?"

"No," I replied, turning my attention back to the beautiful, sunlit reflection pool, breathing in the scent of the blooming jasmine in the conservatory. The heavy, toxic anchor of the Walker family had been cut loose, sinking into the abyss of their own making. I was finally, entirely free. "That will be all, Gerald. The past is officially closed."
