Chapter 1 - The Cream Envelope

Through the tinted glass of the town car, I watched the Manhattan skyline blur into a wash of glittering, meaningless lights. The reflection in the rearview mirror showed the entrance of the Plaza Hotel shrinking into the distance. I could still see the exact moment Margaret opened her trembling hand. I saw Daniel’s arrogant, comfortable posture instantly shatter as he stared down at the three-carat heirloom diamond he had placed on my finger seven years ago.
He lunged toward the curb, shouting my name into the freezing rain, but the car was already turning the corner, erasing him from my line of sight forever.
I sank back against the plush leather seat and let out a long, ragged breath. I didn't cry. The tears I had spent years shedding in empty hotel rooms and silent, lonely bedrooms had completely dried up. In their place was a terrifying, crystalline clarity.
My trembling fingers reached into my designer evening bag and pulled out the thick, cream-colored envelope. It bore Daniel’s name in my own careful handwriting. I had spent weeks agonizing over the perfect moment to give it to him. I had bought a new dress, booked the town car, and painted on a smile, genuinely believing that the secret inside this envelope would be the miracle that finally bridged the growing chasm between us.
I broke the wax seal and pulled out the contents.
It was a glossy, black-and-white ultrasound photograph. Resting in the center of the static was a perfect, tiny silhouette. A heartbeat I had heard for the first time just three days ago. I was nine weeks pregnant.
I traced the edge of the photograph with my thumb. Daniel had stood under the chandelier, his arm wrapped possessively around Vanessa Cole’s waist, smiling as she mocked my existence. He had made his choice. He had chosen the glamorous, empty validation of his mistress over the quiet, steadfast loyalty of his wife.
He thought he was sacrificing a boring marriage for a thrilling new chapter.
He didn't know that by smiling at Vanessa’s cruel joke, he had just forfeited his only child. And he certainly didn't know that the quiet, patient wife he had just thrown away was the invisible architect holding up his entire billionaire lifestyle.
I pulled my phone from my purse and dialed a number I hadn't used in three years.
"Marcus," I said when my lead wealth manager answered on the second ring. "It's Amy."
"Amy," Marcus replied, his voice instantly sharp and attentive. "It's late. Is everything alright?"
"Everything is perfectly fine," I said, my voice turning to absolute ice. "I need you to initiate the Alpha Protocol on the Harrison Global accounts. Revoke the blind trust’s backing. Call in the mezzanine debt. I want every single line of credit tied to Daniel Harrison frozen by midnight."

"Are you sure?" Marcus asked softly. "That will trigger an immediate corporate collapse."
"I have never been more sure of anything in my life," I whispered, looking down at the ultrasound of my baby. "Burn his empire to the ground."
