Chapter 5 - The Envelope's Secret

Daniel fell to his knees on the carpeted floor of the boardroom. The arrogant man who had flaunted his mistress was completely gone, replaced by a sobbing, broken shell of a human being.

"Please, Amy," Daniel wept, tears streaming down his face as he reached out toward me. "I was a fool. I was blind. Let me make it right. Just give me a chance to speak to you. To know you again. Please."

Before I could answer, the heavy boardroom doors swung open.

Leo ran into the room, holding up a piece of paper. "Mommy! Look what I drew!"

Daniel froze. His tears stopped. He stared at the four-year-old boy standing next to my chair. He saw the dark hair. He saw the undeniable, familiar shape of the boy's jawline. And then he looked at the boy's eyes. They were his own.

The realization hit Daniel with the physical force of a bullet. He looked from Leo, up to me, his mouth opening in a silent scream of absolute agony.

"The envelope," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling so violently he could barely speak. "The cream envelope you brought to the gala... you were..."

"I was pregnant," I stated softly, lifting Leo into my lap and holding him protectively against my chest. "I brought the ultrasound to the gala. I was going to surprise you. But you surprised me first."

Daniel let out a guttural, agonizing sob, clutching his chest as if his heart had been physically ripped out. He hadn't just thrown away a loving wife. He had thrown away his only child. He had traded a beautiful, perfect family for a fleeting, worthless illusion.

"He's my son," Daniel choked out, reaching a shaking hand toward Leo. "Please, Amy. He's my son."

I stood up, towering over him, radiating a fierce, untouchable maternal fury.

"He is my son," I corrected him, my voice vibrating with lethal promise. "You do not exist to him. You chose Vanessa. You chose your ego. And you chose your own ruin. Security, remove this man from my building."

I turned my back on Daniel and walked toward the windows, holding Leo tightly in my arms. I didn't look back as the security guards entered the room, hauling a sobbing, screaming Daniel to his feet. He was dragged out of the building, stripped of his job, his dignity, and the devastating realization of the family he could have had.

I looked out at the London skyline, the afternoon sun breaking through the clouds. Daniel had thought he was the architect of my reality. He didn't know that by pushing me into the dark, he had only forced me to build my own sun.

I kissed the top of Leo's head, feeling a profound, radiant peace settle over my entire empire. The past was finally dead. And our future was absolutely bulletproof.
