Chapter 3 - The Microphone and the Truth

Melissa blinked, her condescending smile faltering. “Emily, your father invited me—”
“I don't care who invited you,” Emily snapped, the lace of her gown rustling as she took a step closer to the table. “Get out of my mother's chair. Now.”
Melissa looked at David for help, but the entire ballroom was beginning to notice the commotion. The low hum of conversation nearby had stopped. People were turning in their seats, watching the bride confront a guest at the head table. Humiliated and realizing she had completely miscalculated the optics, Melissa grabbed her purse, stood up, and practically sprinted toward the ballroom exit.
David’s face turned a mottled, furious red. “Emily! That was completely uncalled for! I am your father, I paid for half this wedding, and I have the right to have a guest—”
“You paid for the open bar, Dad,” Emily interrupted, her voice turning to ice. “Mom paid for everything else. And you don't get to bring the woman you've been sleeping with behind Mom's back to my wedding reception.”
David froze. I froze.
I stared at Emily, my heart pounding against my ribs. “Emily... how did you know?”
Emily turned to me, her eyes softening slightly with a mixture of profound sadness and fierce loyalty. “Mom, I’m twenty-six, not stupid. I saw the text messages on his iPad three months ago when I was looking for the caterer's contract. I knew you were keeping it a secret for me, so I kept it a secret for you. I was going to let him play his part today and cut him out tomorrow. But I am not letting him do this to you.”
Emily didn't wait for David to respond. She turned around, grabbed the microphone resting on the DJ’s booth nearby, and tapped it twice. A loud, sharp feedback screech cut through the ballroom, silencing the string quartet and bringing the entire reception of two hundred guests to a dead halt.
“Excuse me, everyone,” Emily said, her voice projecting crystal clear across the silent room.
David reached for her arm, panic finally breaking through his arrogant facade. “Emily, put the microphone down! Don't do this!”
Mark, Emily’s new husband, stepped smoothly out of the crowd, placing his hand firmly on David’s chest and pushing him back. “Don't touch my wife, David.”
Emily looked out at the sea of faces—family, friends, colleagues.

“I want to thank you all for coming to celebrate with Mark and me tonight,” Emily announced, looking directly at the table where David’s parents and siblings were sitting. “However, there has been a slight change to the evening's program. My father, David, will not be giving the Father of the Bride speech tonight. In fact, he won't be staying for the rest of the reception.”
A collective, horrified gasp rippled through the room.
