Chapter 5 - The Mother of the Bride

David didn't argue. He couldn't. With two hundred pairs of eyes burning into his back, he turned and walked out of the ballroom, his head bowed, his shoulders slumped in absolute defeat. He walked out the heavy double doors to join the mistress who had already fled into the night, leaving the wreckage of his family behind him.

The moment the doors closed, the tension in the room broke.

Emily handed the microphone back to the DJ. She walked over to the head table, picked up the fake place card Melissa had left behind, and ripped it perfectly in half. She walked to the server’s station, retrieved my original, beautiful gold-embossed name card, and set it exactly where it belonged—in the center of the table, right beside the bride.

She turned to me and held out her arms.

I stepped into her embrace, holding my daughter as tears finally spilled down my cheeks. They weren't tears of humiliation or heartbreak. They were tears of profound, overwhelming gratitude.

“I love you, Mom,” Emily whispered into my hair. “Now, sit down. We have champagne to drink.”

The DJ, reading the room perfectly, queued up a lively, upbeat song. The guests, realizing the drama was over and the toxic weight had been removed from the room, began to cheer and clap. Mark walked over, wrapping his arm around Emily's waist and offering me a brilliant, supportive smile.

I sat down in the chair reserved for the Mother of the Bride. I picked up my champagne flute and looked out at the beautiful reception I had built.

David had thought he could erase me. He thought twenty-eight years of quiet compromise meant I was weak, and he assumed his daughter would simply smile for the cameras and accept his disrespect to keep the peace.

He didn't realize that the peace was already gone. And in its place, he had left behind two women who finally knew exactly how much they were worth. I raised my glass to my daughter, took a sip of champagne, and for the first time in a year, I actually enjoyed the party.
