Chapter 2 - The Microphone

Melissa gasped, looking at David for protection. But David was shrinking. The arrogant man who had expected me to quietly fade into the background was suddenly paralyzed by a daughter who refused to play his game of polite complicity.

"You are being completely unreasonable," David hissed, grabbing Emily’s arm. "I am your father. I have a right to be comfortable at my own daughter's wedding!"

Emily yanked her arm away. She turned her back on him, marched directly to the DJ booth, and picked up the microphone.

A sharp screech of feedback sliced through the ballroom. The music abruptly died. Two hundred and fifty guests fell dead silent, turning toward the bride in her magnificent lace gown.

"Excuse me, everyone," Emily announced, her voice echoing off the crystal chandeliers. "I want to thank you all for coming. Unfortunately, we have to make a slight adjustment to the evening's schedule. My father will not be giving his toast tonight. In fact, he is leaving right now."

A collective, horrified gasp swept through the room.

"My father decided to secretly invite his mistress to this reception," Emily continued, staring directly at David as he stood frozen in sheer terror. "He forged a place card and attempted to force my mother to sit with strangers so he could play house at the family table. Mom kept his betrayal a secret for months to protect my wedding day. But I love her far too much to let him humiliate her in return."

Emily pointed directly at the ballroom doors. "Dad, take your guest and get out."
