Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The Mercer Urban headquarters occupied the top two floors of a sleek glass tower in downtown Chicago. Grant had insisted on the expensive real estate to project an image of infallible success.
At 12:15 p.m., the boardroom was a scene of controlled chaos.
Grant stood at the head of the long glass table, sweating through his custom suit. Seven minority investors, including several powerful men who had attended the Meridian gala, sat around the table with expressions ranging from deep skepticism to outright anger.
Celeste sat in the corner, clutching a tablet, her face pale, trying desperately to look like a senior executive rather than a terrified mistress who realized she was tied to a sinking ship.
"Gentlemen, please, you have to listen to me," Grant pleaded, leaning heavily on the table. "The rumors you heard last night are completely fabricated. Julian Vale is attempting a hostile takeover of Mercer Urban. He manufactured those allegations about the forged financials to tank our valuation so he can buy us out for pennies on the dollar!"
"Julian Vale doesn't need to manufacture anything, Grant," said Marcus Vance, one of the primary minority investors. "He’s a billionaire. We saw your assistant assault your wife in public. We saw Vale publicly humiliate you. And this morning, my bank informed me that all Mercer Urban accounts are frozen by court order. Explain the freeze, Grant."
"It's a temporary hold!" Grant lied frantically, his voice cracking. "A clerical error regarding the Whitmore Trust—"
The heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open.
"It is not a clerical error," Elena’s voice cut through the room like a perfectly sharpened blade.
Every head in the room snapped toward the doors.
Elena walked in. She was not wearing the soft, unassuming dresses Grant always picked out for her. She wore a tailored, razor-sharp charcoal suit, a white silk blouse, and the single emerald earring Celeste had dropped the night before.
She looked like the absolute manifestation of old money and lethal authority.
Flanking her on the right was Julian Vale, his presence immediately sucking all the oxygen out of the room. On her left were two men in dark suits carrying leather briefcases—federal agents from the Department of Justice’s financial crimes division.
"Elena," Grant choked out, his knees physically trembling. "You... you can't be here. This is a closed executive session."
"I am the majority shareholder of this company, Grant," Elena said smoothly, walking toward the head of the table. "Because you illegally used the Whitmore Trust as collateral to fund Mercer Urban, the trust technically owns eighty-two percent of your corporate equity. I own this company. I own this boardroom. I own the chair you are sweating on."
Celeste jumped up from her corner seat. "You can't do this! We built this company!"
"You built nothing, Celeste," Elena replied, not even bothering to look at the mistress. "You spent stolen money. There is a profound difference."
Elena stopped at the opposite end of the table, looking directly into Grant's terrified, bloodshot eyes.
"I spent eight years editing your proposals, fixing your math, and holding your hand while you played at being a titan of industry," Elena said, her voice perfectly modulated, echoing in the dead silence of the room. "And you repaid my loyalty by bringing your mistress to my mother's gala, letting her strike me, and forging my signature to steal my inheritance."
Grant stumbled backward, hitting the whiteboard. "Elena, please! We can fix this! We're married! Don't do this in front of them!"
"We were never truly married, Grant. You were just a bad investment," Elena said coldly. She turned to the investors. "Gentlemen. As the majority shareholder, I am executing an immediate motion to remove Grant Mercer from the position of CEO, effective this very second."
The investors, recognizing a sinking ship and a vastly superior captain, did not hesitate.

"Seconded," Marcus Vance said immediately.
"Motion passes," Elena decreed. She nodded to the federal agents. "He's all yours."
