Chapter 5 - The Erasure

The boardroom erupted into chaos, but it was a localized, highly controlled destruction.
"Grant Mercer," the lead federal agent said, stepping forward and flashing his badge. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, embezzlement, and multiple counts of aggravated identity theft."
"No! No, please!" Grant sobbed, the polished, arrogant CEO completely dissolving into a pathetic, weeping coward as the agent grabbed his arms and forced them behind his back. "Elena! Tell them to stop! I'm sorry! I'll do anything!"
"Celeste Ray," the second agent said, moving toward the corner where the mistress was hyperventilating. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit wire fraud and receipt of stolen corporate assets."
"I didn't know!" Celeste shrieked, kicking wildly as the agent handcuffed her, the silver bracelets contrasting sharply with her designer watch. "He told me it was his money! He manipulated me!"
Elena watched the two people who had humiliated her, who had stolen from her, and who had tried to erase her history, being dragged out of the glass boardroom in handcuffs. They were screaming, crying, begging for mercy from a woman who had finally run out of it.
She did not flinch. She felt absolutely nothing but the clean, cold satisfaction of a perfectly executed excision.
When the screaming faded down the hallway, the boardroom was plunged into a heavy, stunned silence. The remaining investors stared at Elena with a mixture of absolute terror and profound reverence.
Elena smoothed the lapel of her tailored jacket and looked at the men around the table.
"Gentlemen," she said, taking a seat at the head of the table. "Mercer Urban is officially bankrupt. However, the Whitmore Foundation is prepared to buy out your minority shares at a five percent premium to save you from a total loss. I suggest you take the deal."
They didn't argue. They practically tripped over themselves to sign the exit papers.
An hour later, the boardroom was empty.
Elena stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the Chicago skyline. The city looked different today. It looked like it belonged to her again.
Julian Vale walked up quietly behind her, stopping a respectful distance away.
"You handled that with terrifying precision," Julian murmured, his voice a low, warm rumble in the quiet room. "Your mother would have been unspeakably proud."
Elena smiled, turning to look at the billionaire who had handed her the microphone when she needed it most.
"I couldn't have done it without the Meridian cameras, Julian," Elena said softly.
"You would have destroyed him with or without me, Elena. I merely provided the venue." Julian stepped closer, his dark eyes studying her face. "Now that you have your empire back, what do you plan to do with it?"
"I plan to rebuild," Elena said, looking out at the city. "Properly, this time."
"I know a thing or two about rebuilding," Julian offered, a slight, genuine smile touching his lips. "Perhaps Vale Meridian and the Whitmore Trust could finally discuss that partnership. Over dinner. Just the two principals."
Elena looked at him, feeling a genuine spark of warmth in her chest for the first time in years.
May you like
"I would like that very much, Julian."
She turned away from the window, leaving the ashes of Grant Mercer's life behind her, and walked out of the glass tower to reclaim her city.
