Chapter 2 - You can't just walk out of here

The dining room had emptied into the grand hall. The fourteen guests, including Grant's mother and his business partners, stood in awkward, hushed clusters as Claire wheeled her suitcase toward the heavy double doors.

If a photographer had been present to capture that exact, permanent shift in power—they would have documented the precise moment Grant Whitmore lost control of the narrative. In the image, Claire is the undeniable focal point, walking toward the open door with absolute, chilling composure, her maternity dress glowing against the stark marble. Grant is positioned a few steps behind her, his handsome face finally cracking in genuine confusion and alarm as he reaches a hand out to stop her. Clinging to his arm is Vanessa, trying to maintain her smug victory but looking entirely unmoored by Claire’s refusal to break. And in the background, the elite guests watch in stunned silence as the pregnant wife walks out into the Connecticut night, abandoning her billionaire husband without shedding a single tear.

"Claire, stop," Grant demanded, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceiling. "You have no money of your own outside of the joint accounts. I will freeze your cards. You can't just walk out of here."

Claire paused with her hand on the brass doorknob. She looked back at him, her eyes completely devoid of the warmth he had spent years taking for granted.

"You made your choice, Grant," Claire said softly, her voice carrying across the silent hall. "Enjoy your dinner."

She pulled the door shut behind her.
