Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the Machine

Grant froze Claire's credit cards at 8:00 AM the next morning. It didn't matter.

By the time he made the calls, Claire was already completely off the grid. She hadn't touched the joint accounts in six months. As a former forensic accountant, she knew exactly how money moved, how it hid, and how to make herself financially invisible.

For a week, Grant played the victim. He told the board of Whitmore Urban Group that his wife was suffering from severe prenatal depression. He moved Vanessa into the master bedroom. He assumed Claire was staying at a mid-tier hotel, crying, waiting for her pride to break so she could crawl back and accept the divorce terms he would dictate.

He didn't notice the red ledger was missing until Thursday.

Grant tore the master bedroom apart. He ripped the jewelry drawer out of the closet, exposing the biometric safe. It was empty. The color drained from his face as he realized what had actually happened on the night of their anniversary.

Claire hadn't just packed her clothes. She had taken the architecture of his entire criminal existence.

For three years, Grant had been embezzling millions from the Whitmore Urban Group's investors, funneling the money into offshore shell companies to fund his extravagant lifestyle and his expensive mistresses. Claire had noticed the discrepancies early on. She had spent months quietly downloading the encrypted wire transfers onto the flash drive, and documenting the shell companies in the red ledger.

She hadn't told him. She had waited to see if he would ever choose her.
