At 9:01 a.m. the next morning, the manufacturing floors in New Jersey went perfectly, entirely dark.

Ryan had planned a massive champagne brunch at Bellamy Beauty’s Manhattan headquarters to announce Evelyn as the new, glamorous face of the brand. Instead, he spent the morning watching his stock plummet into the abyss as cease-and-desist orders flooded his legal department.

The manufacturers called. The distributors called. Sephora called.
